A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has warned that the refusal of President Goodluck Jonathan to grant amnesty to terror group, Boko Haram, can plunge the country into another civil war.

Ribadu, who was the presidential candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria in the 2011 presidential election, spoke on Liberty FM in Kaduna on Saturday.

He urged the President to grant amnesty to the violent Islamist sect for peace to return to the country, saying he (Jonathan) should not claim that the sect members were ghosts.

He argued that with the way things were happening in the country, if nothing was done, “Nigerians will lose Nigeria to a civil war.”

Advising Nigerians against voting for a leader they can not trust, he told Jonathan to “hearken to the voice of the people.”

Ribadu said, “Jonathan was wrong to have said he will not grant amnesty to Boko Haram; he should not fail to protect the people and when people call saying we are tired, we are down; even if it means to dialogue and have an solution to the whole process, he should opt for such.

“You cannot say they are faceless because faceless people do not do things like this. Faceless people cannot be responsible and daily you see them on Facebook. Faceless people cannot be in your custody; ghosts cannot be people that are in the community, people who at a point wanted to dialogue.”

The former EFCC chairman added that a war could be averted “if we come together forgetting about sentiments, about differences and working towards unity and saving the resources of this country because it is only through that that we will be able to achieve peace.”

Ribadu added that the presidential pardon granted former Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and others showed that Jonathan was insensitive to the plight of the Nigerian masses.

According to him, it was worrisome for a government that knew nothing about the case to pardon the former governor who was convicted for looting public funds. He argued that the action was a big setback for the fight against corruption in the country.

He said, “The pardon granted Alamieyeseigha and Shettima Bulama by the President is a tragic development. A very unfair action against Nigerians because corruption is our biggest problem and any step taken against the direction of reversing it is a negative development in our own country.

“Our leaders are very insensitive to the ordinary people and very unfair to Nigeria. If you take selfish interest before the interest of the people, personally, as a person who did the work of fighting corruption, they were my own cases and they were extremely very important to me.

“They were the first set of convictions that we recorded and they were significant because they were the first set of cases of convictions in Nigeria since independence. We have never had a governor or a Chief Executive Officer of a bank being convicted for a crime.”

Meanwhile, a coalition of Northern civil society groups, led by Mallam Shehu Sani, also faulted the pardon granted Alamieyeseigha, saying it had made nonsense of the anti-corruption crusade of the Federal Government.

The coalition argued that the pardon granted the late Gen. Shehu Yar’Adua, former Chief of General Staff , Gen. Oladipo Diya and the late Gen.Abdulkareem Adisa was just to give creditability to the exercise.

It said, “What we know very well is that pardon for Alamieyeseigha is unpopular, and President Jonathan has demonstrated over the years to be rewarding corruption and aiding and abetting it.”

Mallam Ribadu, you cried of corruption and demand Amnesty for killers.I am dissapointed @ a you,a Lawyer and a former Police officer who should have known better that nobody is above the Law.To ask for Amnesty for serial kills is spitting on the grave of the dead murder by your Brothers whom you and your fellow Northerners sponsored.

That's wisdom for you. Everybody wants peace and we don't see the use of force crushing the Boko guys. It is just a matter of when this crisis will escalate, they're penetrating Lagos already.

Why is it that almost everyone from the far north and almost all muslims want amnesty for Boko haram?
This call for amnesty for Boko haram seems to be getting louder by the day.

The northern leaders and muslims calling for amnesty for boko haram should first convince the leadership of boko haram to cease fire, even if its for 1week so the govt can give the call for amnesty a second thought.

Can any sensible govt declare amnesty for boko haram while killings is going on?
It is sign of weakness if any govt does that.

Even at the peak of the Niger delta militancy, the Niger delta militants declared cease fire a number of times to see if the govt will respond to their demand. There was cease fire leading up to the declaration of amnesty for the Niger delta militants by Yar Adua. But it appears cease fire does not exist in Boko haram dictionary.

Who has determined if Boko haram is ready to accept amnesty? No one.

I think those proffering solution to the Islamic militancy in the north should suggest WORKABLE solutions, not just rhetorics. The president is powerful but I doubt if he has powers to command rainfall.

What is wrong with Nigerians. Even the people you will think have common sense don't have it or they have refused to apply it.
What is it that Boko Haram is agitating for? (At least we can say that MEND was agitating for the control of their resources).
What does Boko Haram want? Why should we grant amnesty to Terrorists? ( I won't be surprised if GEJ, grants them amnesty, after all he pardons ex-convicts).
Who says that another Terrorist group will not spring up, if BH is granted amnesty? (after all Nigeria is good in copying the bad and ugly).
Who are the spokes persons of BH?
Why can't they show their faces?
Why is it now that power has been taken from the North, that they are being more vocal about Break up and war?
There are so many questions begging for answers, but am truely and deeply disappointed in Nuhu Ribadu.

this mallam is truly a mallam..we are all insupport of the amnesty, but how can amnesty be given to faceless group? Militants came out dropped weapons and were granted amnesty.
Infact I suspect this ribadu as their spokesman...let them come out from hiding and state there annoyance. Simple and short.

If they don't want to come out, let them continue bombing and wipe out all hausa genereation. Then we will take the land.. A sure means to win a battle that our fore fathers didn't win years back (biafran war)
Please talk to your boys

amnesty is the next plausible step to take now if the state can not stop the killing of innocent citizens nor crush the boko cancer unless you dont give a damn bout innocent civilians.

maasoap: That's wisdom for you. Everybody wants peace and we don't see the use of force crushing the Boko guys. It is just a matter of when this crisis will escalate, they're penetrating Lagos already.

1st, am talking here about the HYPOCRISY of Double Speak, which essentially raises questions abut the intentions of persons engaging in it. As recent as a week ago, the same people (Northerners, Opposition) now trying to blackmail the FG into granting 'Amnesty' to BH were telling all of us that these same BH ANIMALS were PDP chaps. So why are they SUDDENLY in the front shouting 'protection' for those same 'PDP members'? That is the HYPOCRISY I was talking about.

2nd, and talking about more serious things now, am not ordinarily against finding a means to stopping the terrible killings going on in parts of the country, even if it may mean granting Clemency to some of these ANIMALS. I want the Senseless Killings STOPPED as early as Yesterday if possible. But one must also make sure that whatever one does does not in fact aggravate the situation further. For instance, who would we be granting this 'Amnesty' to?? Are the people we intend giving this 'Amnesty' really ready to accept same. What if the Govt offers the said 'Amnesty' and the terrorists reject it? How do you think it will make the nation look??

What these people crying for 'Amnesty' now, esp Northerners, should have done is to 1st convince these people to show signs that they are serious about peace by declaring a REAL ceasefire for say a month, after which the GOVT may then offer Clemency for the foot soldiers (many of whom should have been tired of been FUGITIVES by now). By d way, the CORE BH men would never accept Dialogue though cos they are IDEOLOGUES (ie EXTREMISTS who would never accept any thing short of attaining their Beliefs)- lets stop fooling ourselves in the belief that there is any way we can 'convince' these ones to embrace Dialogue. These ones need to be taken out, FULL STOP. Hopefully, once we have been able to deny them much of their foot soldiers and ANY support from Northern communities, they can then be more easily taken out.

Much depends on Northern leaders and Communities. They MUST reject any Justification for terrorism and make it clear to these ANIMALS that they DONT and WOULD NEVER support them, now or any time; and then convince the foot soldiers to lay down their weapons, then we all will be sure that they are in deed ready for PEACE without the Nation losing anything. Till then, they all seem to me a Bunch of Loud-mouthed Noise makers.

NB: Whatever 'Amnesty' that may be offered MUST not include any monetary 'Benefits' to these foot soldiers. The FG should however, provide a plan for the Rehabilitation of the communities that have been affected by the violence, esp in the Northeast. I personally would not be adverse to some sort of a 'Marshal Plan' for the Northeast region.

Tinubu, spewed his own amnesty gibberish last week. This week, Nuhu, spewed his own, fine. I have a quest for all you amnesty apostles. Why can't you tell your kinsmen to embrace the supposed "PEACE OF ISLAM"? What other grievance does BH have, other than they want to "islamize an already islamize Banana republic? Tinubu and Ribadu, does it mean that if you were to be the president, you'll just grant amnesty to any disgruntled rogue that took bombing of innocent lives as a hobby? Why can't you tell BH to stop making Northern Nigeria, the Somalia, that it is already ( Killing health workers, teachers ad construction workers).

I think many of you politicians are even worse than GEJ. As in you're "DULLER" and more RETARDED than Gej.

The only thing I admire in this GEJ, is his attitude toward you Northern elites parasite, that resorted to bombing as means to fight him
. Keep bombing ,killing and destroying your people and its environs, when you're tired, you'll STOP and if you won't stop COOL. Northern muslims are the WRETCHED OF THE EARTH, ACCEPT IT and LIVE WITH. Shedding innocent blood won't bring PROGRESS TO AN ALREADY DEAD and ARID HELL HOLE
Re: Ribadu Faults Jonathan, Wants Amnesty For Boko Haram by Nobody: 8:32am On Mar 25, 2013
LOL. Buhari can speak through all his proxies but one thing for sure is that boko haram will be crushed with force and not amnesty. With the only remaining sane voice in the north now corrupted, am damn sure no Hausa Fulani or northern offspring would win presidential elections in Nigeria again.

Ribadu now we know you too are BOKO HARAM. GEJ & Ihejirika will crush you all first, then divide the country and leave you and the SW with your new Somali-like country tongue
Re: Ribadu Faults Jonathan, Wants Amnesty For Boko Haram by daywatcher: 8:34am On Mar 25, 2013
what if Boko Haram do not want amnesty and vow to continue the struggle until sharia is implemented in the who of Nigeria?
Re: Ribadu Faults Jonathan, Wants Amnesty For Boko Haram by PointB: 8:40am On Mar 25, 2013
Boko Haram members should lay down their weapons and melt into the night. And hope and prays they are not fished out and fair judgement meted to them as they walk around 'free'.

In any case, It would be very immoral to 'pay' them for killing other people in senseless fashion. It beats me that Ribadu failed to appreciate that.

What does Ribadu propose FG do for the countless victims, and families torn apart?

I again join well meaning Nigerians to say:

#NO TO AMNESTY FOR TERRORISTS

A GROUP OF PEOPLE SAID THEY WANT TO ISLAMIZE A PLURAL STATE and ALL RIBADU & HIS COHORTS COULD COME UP WITH IS " GRANT THEM AMNESTY" REALLY? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL USA, TO GRANT AMNESTY TO AL-QEDA WHEN YOU WENT TO AFGHANISTAN TO WORK? ONE US SOLDIER WOULD HAVE OPEN YOUR SKULL FOR YOU.

HONESTLY, GEJ SEEMS SMARTER THAN MOST OF YOU GUYS, AND THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS AND WORDS, Y'ALL ARE GRADUALLY HANDING THE 2015 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION TO HIM WITHOUT HASSLES.

FYI, MEND means, movement for the EMANCIPATION of oil well owners.

Boko Haram, (NORTHERN ELITES) HAVE NO LEVERAGE,oil well, economic advantage or anything to EMANCIPATE. So, they should wake up!!!

It gets stranger by the day. Hitherto crusaders of anti-corruption and nationalism fail to see the contradictions in their stand, utterances and political persuasions. In one breath, this former anti-corruption czar lampoons the government for rewarding corruption and sleaze, with the pardon extended to some politicians, and in another, just couldn’t wait to catch the chorus train of those drumming support for “amnesty” for a murderous group of insurgents, with a backing threat of civil war if not heeded. Anyways, politicians do not make a fascinating study for inconsistencies and multiple moralities. The real sympathy is with the gullible and naïve who queue up behind these heroes, messiahs and solution providers.

What is more curious, is ever since the Sultan, voiced this suggestion, there has been a surge of support from several camps including those touted as the alternative; contrast this with the criminal silence that attends the actions of this group intent on furthering a murderous agenda with religious and political undertones, whenever they decide to overrun a community and people. If history is any good indication of hindsight, the choir of amnesty apologists would force some expediency or volte-face, at the very least, by government.

At least one point has been validated, which avers that the average Nigerian has never risen above their ethnic and religious loyalties, and it brings to question the nagging issue of Nigeria’s identity crisis and nation definition. By all accounts, project Nigeria seems more clobbered with each unsure step and, in search of resolution by its constituents-expressed under varied mutinous cloaks and agendas. There are still roads to take, peaceable coexistence under various umbrella-confederate, republic or dismemberment-whatever the negotiated choice, or the highway that leads to Rwanda and the Balkans.

Granting amnesty to the socalled bokoharam will mean legitimizing islamists fundamuentalism, and that is suicidal.

If there is going to be any civil war in Nigeria,It will be between liberal /visionary's north and the fundamentalist/reverse evolution north. They are the ones at war at the moment and that is what "sages" like ribadu should be crying out for.

Because it is their region. Does calling 4 amnesty means that they're sympathetic to Boko Haram? NO! If the use of force can't do it then, the next step is for FG to show seriousness in dialogue. These young abokis are massively trooping down south almost everyday which is not good
