Stereotype Of American Ethnicities By Africans by Abagworo(m): 11:47am On Mar 26, 2013 |
While stereotyping is wrong and has never been proven to be 40% accurate, we seem to live in a world where stereotypes is popular among the masses. These stereotypes could stem from history or mere imaginations. In the recent past, movies, music and political events have played a role in stereotyping. Jews are stereotyped to be shrewd businessmen who control underground politics and trade and can do anything to sustain that. They rarely enjoy their wealth but are rather happy acknowledging their acquisitions. Blacks or AAs are stereotyped as low class gangsters that engage in local drug peddling and are usually addicts. They don't marry but keep having children without families. They mostly drop out of high school and depend on family support. Many are hip-hop heads and believe you have to kill or sell drugs to earn street credibility. Hispanics or Latinos are stereotyped almost same as blacks but are considered as distributors of drugs on a larger scale and more dangerous foot soldiers to the Italians who are stereotyped as controllers of underground drug industry in the world. Whites or Europeans are stereotyped as weak sub-urban group that have no say when it comes to "ruggedity", hardship, street credibility or ghetto life. Mostly college graduates and engaged in white collar jobs. |

Africans in Africa don't stereotype Americans in such great detail. Two ideas of America come to mind generally. A powerful and surreal country where any dream is possible. An immoral babylon filled with sexed up girls, gun-toting gangsters and curse words. 1 Like |

nnenna.1:I disagree with the bolded. Apart from America been seen as a place where dreams come to pass, a lot of Africans see Americans as morally deficient. It's mostly the movies that help spread this unequal stereotypes. We're made to believe that most(if not all) Black youths in ghettos have a gun or knows someone who has a gun. We're also made to believe that in America just about everything that is bad and evil is possible. For a lot of people, it seems as if those are the only things that come to mind when America and it's people are mentioned. People even forget that there are born again Christians who live a peaceful and happy life in the suburbs. The media really doesn't show us these peopl. |

Afam4eva: Okay, you just repeated exactly what nnenna.1 said. Read the other two lines of her post and you will realize she just said exactly what you just said except in fewer sentences. 1 Like |
