There are few pictures or illustrations in the collections that are worth analytical discussions and I bring them now for that purpose. 1. An indigeneous grounding rod 2. An indigenous lightening chain and its grounding rod and electrode anchored into a lode stone 3. A water treatment and supply system. These are what the racist German explorer, Leo Frobenius, documented that he saw in his journeys through Yorubaland. He was the same man who introduced the Bronze heads of Ile-Ife to Europe.. This was in the period 1910-12. The first electricity generating plant was built in 1898. The first water supply system was built in 1910 . It is evident that these unique engineering is native to the people and what is seen here is just a scratch on the surface of the total collections. Among the Yorubas his interest primarily was in Ibadan, Ife and Ilorin. I wonder how much he would have in collections if he had toured each of the cities of Yorubaland. More revealing is the fact that as a race Yoruba was far more technologically advanced in 1900 and earlier periods than the non-allied states of Europe and even far ahead than a half of continental USA. 5 Likes

Proudly Yoruba, Omo Odua pombele! But Op, why did you put Oyo as the origin of Yoruba race? It's Ile-Ife in Osun State. ____________________ Last Bullet: Ife terracotta & bronze head artworks are the most naturalistic in Africa, if not the World. I dust my cap for the Craftsmen of early Yoruba time. Their skill is beyond the Whiteman's expectation. Yoruba land is arguably the best at craftmaking in Nigeria. 8 Likes |

jennyo: I thought the yoruba name was given by the fulanis' and by the 11th century there was nothing like yoruba land or tribe rather we had the Aworis, ijebu's Egba's and the Oyo You are correct. I understand we were called Anagos until the fulanis coined the name Yorubawa to imply the cunning nature of the Oyo people in trading transactions. Yorubas in Cote d'Ivoire are still called Anango till today. Oyo dialect dominated as it was the language of the rather large empire that covered almost the entire present day yoruba land. Can anyone see some similarity in the agbada designs of yorubas and fulanis as well as with royal trumpets (kakaaki oba) It seems the trading with the Portuguese was mainly by the coastal people such as Ijebus and Binis who had a strong presence in Eko that can still be seen today if you dig well enough. I think the rather developed nature of the yoruba society was partly based on the city-states that existed very early on thus allowing division of labour, specialisation and civil authority organisation at different levels from the family to household to quarters, village and town/king. BTW the OP did not state the source or maybe he wrote it all up himself like that. 5 Likes 1 Share |

nijanigga: What is the basis of this assertion? Any source? Why and how did the Ogun people allow their will to develop be killed Looks like another attempt to abscond RESPONSIBILITY for our failures!!! Let us not forget that the yorubas had been trading with the fulanis at the northern fringes of the old Oyo empire and also with Portuguese from the coast since the 15th century. It is not unlikely that the technological items were the result of such interacton as opposed to complete development by the yorubas. |

Let me know if you are interested. Good initiative. I hope the documentary comes out well and leads to other similar laudable initiatives. I find it very shameful that our rich cultural heritage is mostly DETAINED and EXPLOITED by our white masters. Shameful. Yet we have wealthy people who cannot be bothered to invest in and turn a profit from cultural heritage projects. I remember some story about Oyinlola paying millions of dollars to re-acquire artefacts collected by some Australian(?) from Osun state. Crazy!!! 2 Likes |

Abeg stop your unnecessary ethno-boast. Have you seen the Igbo and hausa cultural heritage items Did you hear about the Nok culture? Nok is supposed to be based somewhere in the middle belt of Nugeria today and the archeological finds bear semblance to some of the works from Ife, believe to be the cradle of the yoruba nation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nok_culture Every ethnic group has something to be proud of in its heritage. The big question we should ask is: If our ancestors made so much progress on their own (from running around naked to making fabulous things for daily life's convenience), how come we have not been able to make any progress in modern day 3 Likes 1 Share |

@anonimi thanks for your kind words. It's interesting to know that some people are trying to recover/restore these historic masterpieces to thier Nigerian source but it is frightening to see the attitude of both leaders and the public to cultural treasure. Have you seen our maintenance culture? Check out our museums and public property. 3 Likes |

anonimi: Can you fu*ck away with your wikipedia and other rubbish? If i deal with you today, you will malfunction and start speaking in your real language. Silly spambot. Ewu gambia. OP, Nice post. The oyinbo guys handwriting na die. Contrary to what you wrote about him being only interested in Ilorin, Ibadan and Oyo i see him documenting Egba, Idanre and something that looks like Ekiti/Ijebu tribal marks. Wonderful Architecture though. I will like to understand why they chose such a style and how these things fare in raining season. The insides of the homes look like they were made from cement or well polished somehow and very dry. . Those looms are just genius. I know women used to pass down some wonderful wrappers. When my grandma died we got so many from her and her own mothers as inheritance. Sadly we didnt value them and threw most away. My own share alone was over 30. I feel bad now. 3 Likes |

nijanigga: You miss my point entirely. There is no doubt about our INDIVIDUAL intelligence and creativity as black people but how do we translate it into societal advancement? Is it due to our primitive selfishness BTW, the poundo-yam machine was designed and developed by a Nigerian for sure but could not be mass produced and marketed from Nigeria hence it being hijacked by those who understand and have the means devoted to creating value for sale. Samsung and LG are arguably the leading TV brands today. They are both South Korean companies. South Korea had nothing to do with the development of TV technology.
