Is A Password Enough? by connkg(m): 7:07am On Apr 05, 2013
Hello,

I left my HP 630, Windows 7 laptop on the floor of the front passenger seat of my car, which was broken into and the laptop taken. I was its only User and Admin. I also used a password.
I'm a little knowledgeable, so had installed "Prey".
Thing is, it has to boot fully before "Prey" 'rocks'. What are the perp's alternatives? Can start-up passwords be bypassed?
I'd hoped to be able to recover it by now, almost three months later...

While start-up passwords on Windows help deter unauthorized access a PC, it isn't entirely sufficient. Several demonstrated methods exist that over-ride passwords.
You may want to, in future, consider encrypting your drive as an added layer of security. With encryption, methods of overriding the password aren't potent.

Three months later? I doubt you'd recover the laptop unless you know the thief.

Thank you. Will search for an encryption software.
