FG Directs Military To Establish 2 Operational Bases In Cross River

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the military to establish two bases in Cross River to protect areas sharing border with Bakassi Peninsula.

Brig.-Gen. Okwuodili Azinta, the Commander 13 Brigade, Calabar, said this at an interactive session with journalists in Calabar.

Azinta said the Federal Government had directed that a Forward Operation Base be sited at Ikang and Dayspring 1 in the state.

He said the base would be located in Ikang, while its naval equivalent would be sited at Dayspring 1, all in Bakassi Local Government Area.

Some Bakassi indigenes, recently displaced by Cameroon security forces, were accommodated at the Akwa Ikot Edem Primary School, Akpabuyo Local Government Area.

Sequel to this, the Federal Government set up a committee to resettle the affected persons.

Good move! Since Bakassi peninsula has fallen to Cameroon, it's imperative to shore up bases and increase military strength/activities in Cross River State in order to monitor activities of the Gendarmes and deter any potential attack or invasion.

Better late than never, but this is the same lackadaisical attitude by the FG that allowed Boko Haram to become a monster. All these many years that Nigerians have been attacked and killed in Bakassi the FG is just waking up now.
What a giant!!!

At a time when the Nation's ability to protect her citizens is seriously been tested, someone's finally spotted some low-hanging fruit which has been dangling seductively for eons.

Good to see the government finally waking up to its responsibilities towards the displaced citizens in Bakassi.

"Regardless, the territory was transferred to Cameroon on 14 August 2008...The rest of the peninsula will remain under Nigerian civil administration for the next two years, in line with an International Court of Justice ruling" - meaning that Nigerians living in the peninsula after 2010 would do so illegally and were advised to vacate... I can recall efforts were made by the FG and Cross River State governments to evacuate and resettle them but the stubborn ones were claiming our papa land. Some peacefully retraced their roots to Mbo LGA in Akwa Ibom where the Governor provided for them.

Point is, the deed has been done and we need to move on. Those Nigerians still in Bakassi (now in Cameroon) after the administrative period (2010) are there illegally and at their own peril. If anything, I think the Cameroonians have been very patient (waiting up to 3 more years)...

Defiant locals
A few Bakassi young men have said they will stay and fight any attempt by Cameroon to administer the place. Many Bakassi residents say they do not want to live in Cameroon. They have requested help from militants along the coast in the Niger Delta, but it is unclear if any help is forthcoming. cheesy

The sovereignty of Cameroon felt threatened, what did you expect them to do? If someone from Niger Republic in Lagos threatens to get help/assistance from Boko Haram in order to remain in Nigeria, what would LASG and FG do? Don't you think OPC and Lagos agberos would kill the person before police even get there (especially when a militia group was mentioned/to be involved)? undecided
