The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has said it would launch retaliatory attacks against the dreaded Islamic militant group, Boko Haram, in defense of Christians.

The group's email statement by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, reads thus. . . :"The bombings of mosques, hajj camps, Islamic institutions, large congregations in Islamic events and assassinations of clerics that propagate doctrines of hate will form the core mission of this crusade,"

They say they're responding to attacks by Boko Haram on Christians, and that they're defending Christianity.

Noteworthy is the fact that this same organisation took responsibility for the killing of 13 policemen in Bayelsa State.

Is that an act in defense of Christianity, we wonder?

Did anyone ask MEND to take up the role of defender of Christian virtues?

And if anyone is to 'defend Christians', would it be MEND, a group that is fast sinking into the abyss of murderous rage which Boko Haram has found itself.

And whoever said Christians are the only ones being killed by Boko Haram?

Nigerians are indeed concerned, as they see this threat as the harbinger of a possible religious war in the country. . .

. . . But I wouldn't fret if I were them. . .

Anyone with half a brain knows that Boko Haram is a political exercise gone awry, run amok, and totally out of control. The demands by the group are unattainable, and now they're constituting a nuisance to try to thwart the present government into submission.

Religion has NOTHING to do with it. . . Religion is just the cloak which the group uses to carry out its activities.

Mend has appeared increasingly fragmented in recent months. The group behind the current threat against Muslims is believed to comprise disgruntled militants who have turned against the amnesty agreed between Mend and the Nigerian government in 2009.

So out of the ashes of the amnesty programme, and the dregs of the wanton, barbaric killings of Boko Haram, comes this new threat to the lives of already battered Nigerians.

Hope the security operatives are listening. . .
