60 Houses Feared Burnt In Ibadan In A Fuel Tanker Accident OVER 60 houses were feared burnt as a fuel-laden tanker fell at Inalende junction,Omitowoju, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday evening. The incident, an eyewitness informed the Nigerian Tribune, happened around 6.30p.m, when the tanker, with Lagos registration number XJ 288 SMK, fell off as it was trying to manoeuvre its way at the junction. It was gathered that after attempts by the driver to maintain the balance failed, the vehicle fell, thereby spilling its content down the road before it exploded. The raging inferno, the eyewitness said, affected many houses and shops on the street. As of the time of going to press, the fire was still raging, while unconfirmed report had it that some people were trapped in some of the houses and shops already razed by the fire. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that residents and traders had fled the area, as a result of the development, to avoid being trapped in the raging inferno. Some of those who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune lamented their losses to the fire, while others were searching for their loved ones. At press time, fire fighter service operators had arrived the scene of the incident and were making effort to put out the fire. http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/10172-60-houses-feared-burnt-in-ibadan-fuel-tanker-accident

I was there around 6:45pm it happened. I have the pictures on my fone but I'm having trouble uploading it but I'll keep trying, the houses there are old wooden houses almost attached to each other. If not for the large numbers of Operation Burst Police deployed there, people were stoning the fire fighters that came after over 2hours the inferno razed down over 30 houses. See as people were running helter skelter packing out their properties from unaffected houses, some are wailing bitterly, looking for their children. 1 Like |

It was really a pathetic scene, the fire fighter came late but still tried to extinguish the fire, the people were so helpless. What really baffled me at the scene was how the fire 'jumped' a storey building to raze down a bungalow beside it. May God console the people affected. |
