Mobile number portability MNP is a system that allows mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. This is a system that's
been adopted by many developed countries as far back as 14 years ago and it is simply to enable telecommunications users to retain their phone number when changing to a new network. for example, if you are on Airtel network with the line ---> 08089636227, if you decide to change to another mobile network like Glo, you won't have to worry about being out of reach or how to get your new line passed across to your contacts because the MNP, Mobile Number Portability will now enable you to switch to that new network (Glo) and still retain the same digits as your AIRTEL network. The service will be launched in Nigeria by the NCC on the 30th of April, 2013 and will firstly be available to Glo, MTN, ETISALAT and AIRTEL network subscribers while other CDMA operators will follow.

IMPORTANT Terms Used in The Process

Below are the most important terms used in the Mobile Number Portability Process. You will need to understand them as the service get launched by NCC.

1. Donor: refers to the current network you are using and wish to change from.
2. Recipient: refers to the new network you wish to change to.
3. Porting: refers to the process of changing from one Mobile network to another and still retaining the digits.

HOW IT WORKS

• Customer would visit the office of the new network of his/her choice. When you get to the office of the recipient, you will be issued MNP request form to fill.

• The new carrier will then confirm the consumer's identity and then make a porting request to the old carrier through the porting Clearinghouse.

• When consumers go to their new carrier to port a number, they should bring along an identification, which will have their correct name and address as it appears in the SIM Registration database. This will aid in making the porting process go smoothly.

• Once a valid porting request has been made, the old carrier cannot refuse to port a number.

NB: You must have a valid proof of identity with visible photograph, your SIM must be ACTIVE, you must be able to provide the serial number of your SIM card and you must have registered the active SIM card.
• You can only make a change in 90 days.

Advantages

1. The MNP has several advantages as it would increase competition among the network providers with each and everyone of them trying her best to impress and satisfy their immediate subscribers in order to maintain the numbers of the existing ones and also attract prospective customers.

2. Since subscribers now have nothing to loose regards leaving a bad network provider, Nigerians can now enjoy freedom of choice without stress.

3. Therefore, I think Nigerians should expect a better call and data service in the coming months. What's your own view about this, kindly use the comments box at the end of this post to share with us.
