You must watch out for the specifications of the employer. If they want MS word then you must use that. Almost all computers will definitely be able to open pdf and MS word files, so both are good. However, I prefer PDF because it is better and safer.

I would prefer pdf for accidental alteration reasons but I later discovered I was wrong!

Except otherwise stated, the best format is ms word in 'compatibility mode'. From the facts I got from HR friends(in the UK also), below are the reasons...

1.
The first person to have access to your CV is the 'sub-level 1' collation officer. She submit the hard (printed) copies to the supervisor. Most time her PC has limited applications. Also, because of load of tasks and deadline, she might be impatient enough to perform the level 1 troubleshooting in case of any error. Therefore, she deals with the easily accessible formats and in the process, she dumps and might not revisit those left aside. There are more than enough CVs already for the vacancy slot.

2.
HR companies that consults for multinationals and other big companies do imprint their logos and any form of identity to your CV (so as to make it their legal document) before sending it out to their client. If this is not achievable, your CV is automatically dumped.

Word format is the Best because most corporate organization in Nigeria use Windows Operating system. They might not have adobe on their PCs

Considering they're a "corporate organisations", pdf readers are a must-have for them.....

For me, in cases where the recepient of ur cv doesn't specify(which is rare),I'd say send it in MS WORD...coz its the most widely accepted document format. I don't think its a "rare thing" not to find adobe/pdf reader on a computer...meanwhile almost every gadget can access word files.

unlike most people on this forum some like myself don't use or even care about Microsoft or its products (MS Word, Windows etc). Though my Libre Office Writer can read MS Word docs fine I still prefer pdf which is a universally acceptable format, second only to plain text.

PDF is more professional and you have a very small chance of anyone editing your CV but if you're unsure, you could always send it in both formats for convenience.

MS Word is always better, recruiting companies logs CVs in a central database from where they do a keyword search against current openings; though PDF is searchable but word is better.

Also, lots of recruiter like to edit your CV aka resume to remove your contact information or to add keywords and things specific to the opening after speaking with you. This way the hiring company go through them when trying to contact you and not you directly and also to let your CV stand out. Many of us might have the experience, but they might not be presented in a CV in such a way to catch the attention of the hiring company's HR....The recruiter knows all these.

Not CV bros... PDF are for Legal and binding documents, if ur sending your CV to an agent , he has 2 format it with the Agencies typo and format with extra bits of info added b4 he or she sends its off

I've ran workshops for various Global/Top recruiting agencies for years... regarding their processes and ways of working, never have I come across an agency that prefers a CV in PDF... Never

yes PDF can be converted back to word and word back to PDF but recruitment agancies do work in fast paced environments and so they need to get hold of your CV format to the clients request and send it

Pdf is better as long as there is no editing to do, you might lose your formating if you send in word.

You have not made any point.. Accept the correction that you goofed, for underlining his typographical errors. We all understand how it is when you typing with the keypad, most times I let the errors be. So boy, you goofed!

No one is perfect.that is what happen in 'opon and cant'.is not a crime to correct mistake but it is a crime to condemn the writer.

That should depend on who is the recipient and what he or she prefers:
1. If you are sending to some, who will send it to someone, send both types. Its safer. If the person wishes to edit it for you, then the Word format becomes handy.
2. Companies, during adverts, will tell you the one they prefer. Some even ask for a simplified Excel format.
3. Generally use Word as most computers have the Microsft software. Preferrable save as Word 97-2003 because not everyone has the newer versions of the software.

I support M.S word version of the CV. Except it is expressly stated that it should be PDF.
Reason is that, there are some reputable recruiting firms that need to tender shortlisted CVs to their clients. The issue is that we applicants tend not to put our experience down in a way that will be attractive and the recruitment firm knows just how to edit to attract the employer. they understand what you want to write. you just didnt use the right words or professional terms.
Imagine your CV is in PDF format and, the recruiter cant edit. then its game up at that point.
NOTE: I said Reputable recruiting firms. (Not the mushroom ones.)
