Buhari Ready To Step-Down For Better Candidate by Nobody: 12:13am On May 02, 2013
Former Head of State and presidential candidate for the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 general election, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said he is ready to step down as presidential candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress in the 2015 presidential election, if there is a formidable and better candidate.

He said he might contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the yet-to-be-registered APC, depending on what happened before the time.

Buhari stated this in Minna at the maiden edition of Sam Nda-Isaiah Public Lecture Series, in honour of the publisher of the Leadership Newspapers, which took place at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre.

Answering questions from journalists on the possibility of him stepping down in case more candidates emerge on the platform of the party, Buhari said, “Whoever thinks he has got a chance, let him come out because the more we are, the merrier it becomes.

“I will be ready to step down if there is a formidable and better candidate. It is not about me but for the survival of the party. APC is about ensuring internal democracy. Whoever emerges is the person I will support. Yes I will be ready to step down.”

Buhari had, earlier in his address at the lecture, called on leaders and those in positions of authority to ensure a viable environment for people to thrive. He also called on the media to constantly demand and put leaders in check.

He said, “The moment there is nobody in the country to make our leaders to create a viable environment, then the nation is in trouble.”

Former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, said the holding of the national conventions of both the CPC and ANPP by May 11, 2013, was ideal as he was ready to drop his presidential ambition for the survival of APC, should a better and formidable candidate emerges as the party’s standard bearer for 2015.

Shekarau, who was at the lecture, said the emergence of APC standard bearer would be democratic, despite the array of formidable presidential materials in the APC.

He said, “It is too early to talk about or to have a presidential candidate. In APC, we will have internal democracy that will guide the party. Let us have the party on the ground first, congresses will be held at various levels that will produce our candidates. At that point, anybody can contest and the party will support the best candidate that emerges.”

Shekarau said as soon as all the merging parties were through with their national conventions, formal requests would be made to Independent National Electoral Commission for APC registration, to give room for other activities that would climax in the emergence of the party’s candidates.

He added, “We are not talking of just dismantling the PDP; we want change. We are not just talking about change in democracy but change in attitude, change in approach, change in character, change in conducting the business of government. That is why our slogan is ‘change’. We are determined to change Nigeria for the better.”

'Step down' would be the most reasonable thing for you to do for your party Sai, anything outside that amounts to courting disasters.

Now, uncle Jonathan over to you. About time you stepped down...

Why on earth would i stop loving this man? He has spoken like a true leader whom he is. In the spirit of sportsmanship, everyone is allowed to contest.

On the other hand, Jonathan is busy chasing after perceived enemies who want to also contest for president under the platform of PDP because he has simply said "NO VACANCY IN ASO ROCK ".Is that how a Democratic leader should behave?

Come 2015,the killer party must be sent to their untimely grave. Sai Buhari 2015!

Waoh!

What a word from a sane man that acknowledges there are still many candidates better than him not minding his age and years of striving to get to the post instead of feeling like the best and hunting his rivals!

How democratic is ur Buhari when he has never ran for party primaries nor accepted the result of elections?
In 2003, he stole the ANPP ticket from Rochas Okorocha, when he was adopted by d north-populated party as its flagbearer. In 2007, it was repeated. In 2011, he appointed himself the flagbearer of CPC and unilaterally picked his running mate. In all this, he protested the outcome of the general elections by calling for violence. Though we hate truth in ds con3, Raila Odinga of Kenya is a better democrat than Buhari.
Buhari is a spent force. He should concentrate on making sure Tinubu does nt infiltrate the APC with his band of brigands. Nigeria deserves a viable opposition.
I wish them well!

Politicians have more tongues than a hydra's head. The statement is not useful, anyway, because he has to acknowledge that the candidate is better than him before stepping down, which he's not likely to do.

What our beloved Ayatollah Buhari Bin Laden means to say is that IF there were a lackey better suited for elevation to the post of Grand Seriki, who could preside over the Sharia Amputation Republic of Nigerianistan, and IF Buhari Bin Laden were not so pathologically desperate to assume that role himself, then MAYBE such a lackey would be given a chance.

Obviously, the truth of the matter is that Buhari Bin-Laden imagines himself to be the ONLY fundamentalist looney who is entitled by birthright to become Nigeria's next dictator and chief embezzler, which of course means that our cute little bug-eyed Ayatollah will shortly announce yet another change of heart, so that he can take yet another toilet run in Nigeria's next presidential elections, with the same LOSING outcome, followed by yet another LOSING bid to overturn the people's mandate in the court of appeals.

You must be a barca fan suffering from acute-bayern-seven-zero-syndrome, who wants to pour all his bitterness on Buhari!

OP, the clause is that a better candidate must emerge which is likely to come from the north because sending GEJ back to Otuoke, 12million votes from the north must be secured. Now the question is that who in the north has clean hands like Buhari and also loved by the people? Who commands respect both in content and character? Ribadu would have been a good replacement had he not gone to mess himself by working with the corrupt regime on the subsidy recommendations. If Fashola is chosen from the south, he may not have somuch vote even in the south because of the Igbos and the SS. GEJ is gonna spend a whole lotta money to hold those places. I really hope he's not giving up just yet because this might just be his last chance to make that change.

I vote Fashola, not because Fashola will be a good president, with Nigerians current government structure it is impossible for anyone to be a good president anyway, Fashola has been advocating for true federalism and this is the solution to Nigeria's problem, it will almost immediately stop the decay and he may not do it if he comes into power but at least he is among the few people talking about it.

Historically, multicultural nations only stuck together by fear, either of the ruler or of another foe that threatend to wipe them all out, they never really prospered and when that ruler or foe was gone they crumbled, when a German noble became king of England he tended to take an English wife to appease the people, marriage is not an option in Nigerian and there are far too many people to appease, no Nigerian can be said to identify with a majority of the people so there will always be discontent over who is president, giving the individual states full autonomy means that the Igbos can do what they want with the east, the pib will pass because the northerners no longer have any reason to reject it as they no longer depend on it and they will do a much better job of getting rid of boko haram, we free the different peoples too shape their homes and they see fit and Nigeria will become developed in our lifetime so ANYBODY WHO WANTS FEDERALISM IN NIGERIA GETS MY VOTE.

Ideology

The agenda of the CPC lies towards the left wing of the political spectrum, supporting individual liberty, rights and social welfare for the less privileged. The party advocates political liberalism, as originated by the American philosopher, John Rawls. The party's manifesto insists on the amendment of the Nigerian constitution with the view of devolving powers, duties and responsibilities to states and local governments in order to entrench federalism and the federal spirit.[8] The party constitution is silent on the issue of zoning, a common practice in Nigeria under which key positions are allocated in rotation to representatives from each region of the country.[7]

This is Buhari's party. He has always stressed the need for federalism but trust nigerians, emotion clouds reason. Let each state take responsibilities for their growth, development, policies and income revenue: glory!

The man is daft and has got nothing to offer Nigeria.
It's high time he stepped down.

By the way, I thought he told us in 2011 that he would never run again.

For a man that told us about "the monkey and baboon being soaked in blood, he killed corpers, asked muslims to vote for only muslims candidates, obviously enjoys the BokoHaram bombings of churches etc. The baboon can contest but he will surely cry again!!!!
