Mayor of Brent, London, Micheal Adeyeye, has disclosed that the population of Nigerian immigrants in London has hit over 1 million people.

Meantime, Governor Babtunde Fashola of Lagos and Mayor of London, Mr. Alderman Gifford stressed the need to strengthen bilateral ties between Lagos and London.

The duo who spoke during a courtesy visit by the Mayor at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja, said that the population of Nigerian and United Kingdom immigrants in both cities have showed that the bilateral ties between both countries was age-long.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Adeyeye, one of the three councillors in London, said that “Lagos is like London because it is full of people with diverse ethnic background.

“That is why we all need to work together so that we can all gain effectively from each another. We have a large community of Nigerians in London, and the population of Nigerians living in the city is over 1 million. This was what we got from the high commission.”

He noted that “this was the reason why there was need to foster business relation between the two nations particularly Lagos and London. And all our efforts would be geared towards ensuring that the partnership grows from strength to strength.”

He expressed joy over the ties, saying “I am happy that this is happening between Nigeria and UK. We all know that there is an age long relation between the two countries.”

Fashola, in his speech said that London and Lagos have made tremendous progress in various sectors of their economy, saying,“I believe that with this, we can learn from each other’s success.”

The governor said; “Today, Lagos is now dealing with challenges of becoming a global city state in the sense that there are several opportunities in the state. And it has become an attractive destination for the world.

“And as we move towards improving our economy in Lagos, there is need for us to strengthened our bilateral ties especially with United Kingdom,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Gifford said “London is a very great city but we realised that London must strengthen its relation with other countries especially Nigeria because there are many Nigerians living in the city. “And this could be further explained by the five commercial banks out of the 250 commercial banks in the city owned by Nigerians,” he said.

According to him, “We have a lot to explore but we believe that to achieve this, it must be done by allowing equal partnership. We believe that the economy that would grow in the next 50 years will be coming from an economy that has great base with a better financial market. If we are going to survive, we must work with these economies. And Lagos is among these economies that have been identified.”

If there are over 1m Nigerians in London; then there should be over 6m Indians/Pakistanis/Bangladeshis/Sri Lankans, over 500,000 Ghanaians, over 2m Caribbeans, over 2m people from SE Asia, over 3m Eastern Europeans, and over 500,000 South Americans... and I haven't added indigenous white Brits, other Africans, North Americans, and people from the Oceania region....

Oops, the population of London is just slightly above 8m - do the maths!!

Take this crap to the Jokes section.. undecided

Anyone with a genuine interest in official figures should peruse the document I have attached (Census_2011.xlsx), as it shows a break down of the population across constituent countries; regions, counties, London boroughs, unitary authorities and districts in England; and unitary authorities in wales.

Tired of reading about all these cooked up stats.

I doubt there are up to 1 million Nigerians in the UK(legal + illegal residents)... I also doubt the population of black people in general is up to the official 3% I see everywhere because once you step outside London - black people are like an endangered specie... grin

500,000 - 700,000 is more plausible for the total population of Nigerians in the UK...

Spread scantily everywhere but definitely not a fifth of the Asian population... That's the reality!

Apart from London and maybe the few black neighbourhoods in Leicester, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, and probably Wolverhampton - black people aren't that many in the UK, tbh...

Illiterate and unexposed journalists who break my heart. Alderman is a title in London, they aren't even elected but appointed by council men or by an exiting alderman.
Mr. Gifford is the lord mayor of London, which is totally different from the position of Mayor of London. Adeyeye and Gifford only represent a tiny fraction of Nigerians in London. Anyways, I don't dispute the 1 million figure. Kudos to the Yoruba people who constitute incredible bulk of those people over there. Its sad though, by the time Nigeria is fixed, all your treasured family lands would be gone and totally sold or taken by Fashola and those arrogant APC political sharks! Don't even know if I am the only bloke who believe England is only good for retirement and not hustling? Can't even vacation in that place. Anyways, Ajah 4 life!

Is it just me, or do our newspapers always have quotes with bad grammar that you KNOW the person didn't use.

They must make the quotes up.
Nobody from the UK sounds like they are from a Naija village when they speak.

Read the quotes from "Mr. Giffords" again. Nobody from London speaks like that. And why does the article have so many spelling mistakes?!?!

Do these writers speak English?

[quote author=Sunny_bobo]Well, it's no surprise that this lie from the pit if hell is coming from an ADEYEYE

Sad the only thing that caught your ethnic bigoted eye is a Yoruba name, and not the opportunities this portends. Imagine the many benefits professional Nigerians at home will rake in if 50% of these people in London decided its time to come settle home. I don't know what's with your people and small-mindedness. Anyway, I choose to see possibilities, not hate or stereotypical judgement. Keep hating Yoruba people, I only pray they never give a damn and keep becoming mayors in developed nations and continue building new dubais, while attracting global attention positively. I hope your insecurity and failingd destroy you and your likes. Chao!
