US To Tighten Student Visa Rules After Boston Bombing by justwise(m): 8:25am On May 04, 2013 |
The US is tightening its screening of international students, its first security change in response to the Boston Marathon bombings last month. The move comes after a student from Kazakhstan - who did not have a valid visa - was accused by police of hiding evidence for one of the bomb suspects. The Department of Homeland Security has ordered border agents to automatically check the visa status of every student. Azamat Tazhayakov had returned to the US despite being dismissed from school. The 19-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday, accused of helping to throw out a backpack belonging to his friend, Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. No second check Mr Tazhayakov's student visa had been terminated by the time he arrived in New York on 20 January, following his academic dismissal from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on 4 January The Department of Homeland Security will "effective immediately" verify that every international student visa is valid, according to an internal memo obtained by the Associated Press news agency on Friday Under the new procedures, border agents will verify a student's visa status before the person arrives in the US, using information provided in flight manifests. If that information is unavailable, they will manually check the visa status through a US database. Beforehand, border agents would only verify a student's status in a database, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, when the person was referred to a second officer for additional inspection or questioning http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22409193 |

As if the visa rules have never been tight, smh. Many students who wanted to study in the USA have been refused visa on some flimsy excuse, na today, even UK don't go about rejecting students visas anyhow. This just another anti immigration excuse, nothing more. 5 Likes |

Quite natural, I'd say, if you're gonna invite somebody into your house only for them to blow it up in the name of Allah. 3 Likes |

They should have been checking their database for visa confirmation even before this unfortunate incident. What was their excuse sef? Their computers , database , electricity is 27 x 7 and so there is no reason why they could not have checked this before. |

wellmax: Africa, seize this opportunity and develop your home country. Stop wasting millions going abroad. Very well said! Do you know how much these americans and british charge if you want to study in their country as a foreign student? a lot! Twice as much as they charge their fellow citizens and permanent residents. Let's put our house in order here in Africa and especially our higher educational system. |

Unprofessional Embassy and Border agents, they refuse genuine immigrants and accept/grant visas to pple with obnoxious intents. That's US style. Until they stop conducting their visa interviews esp in Nigeria as if its one lottery, then I will know they are serious. 2 Likes 1 Share |

gramci:Do you blame them? If USA finds pleasure in sending drones and invading nations on false pretence and lies, y should they feel safe. Is USA the only country in the world? You don't go about setting people's house on fire and expect yours to be secure. There are more terrorist in the world today than 10yrs ago, all thanks to them. Y is UK that allows lot of immigrants from d middle east no facing lot of issues, simple, they mind their business unlike the US who feels they must have a say in every countries affairs. 7 Likes |

A nation with people that appreciates the semblance of unity or whatever it is they have and will fight to preserve it for posterity sake. A government that follows the trail, is tenacious enough to find out its roots and takes giant steps to nip terrorism in the bud with a proactive stance like this one. Nigeria should not 'COPY' the US, but she could emulate the strides and indomitable spirit with which the Americans say NO to cowardly, face covering, murdering, thieving, Godforsaken scumbags who demand a right to God-knows-what because they have a propelled grenade launcher in one hand and profess the name of God. A God that in my opinion, is either a dictator or in extinction, because no God in all his might, eminence and grace, needs scumbags to fight wars for him, talk more senseless wars. 4 Likes |
