Nasarawa Killing: Reps Plead With IGP, Security Agencies To Forgive Ombatse Youths

The House of Representatives has condemned the trend where aggrieved Nigerians take up arms against policemen in the line of duty.

According to the lawmakers, the primary responsibility of government is to provide security for the citizens through security agencies and it would be most criminal to attack them while performing their duties in troubled communities.

The lawmakers’ decision came on the heels of a heated debate brought under matter of urgent national importance which was raised by Joseph Kigbu (CPC, Nasarawa).

Hon. Kigbu urged his colleagues to plead and prevail on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar to forgive youths of the ethnic militia – Ombatse, in Nasarawa State that attacked and killed over 30 policemen in the community.

He said: “If the Federal government does not assist Nasarawa State government to maintain security and amicably resolve her communal differences, this may lead to a further breakdown of peace and order”.

He also spoke on the need to prevail on the police to forgive the community fearing if that was not done, the vengeance missions in Baga, Odi and other places may reoccur.

All the lawmakers who contributed to the debate of the motion condemned in very strong terms the killing of the security agents and called on Federal government to find means of mopping up illegal fire arms across the country to forestall people attacking Securty agents that were carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

In their resolution, the lawmakers recommended adequate compensation to families of the police victims in addition to joining Nasarawa State in reconciling the different warring groups as an alternative to use of force.

The lawmakers mandated the National Emergency Mnagement Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to victims of communal clashes since January 2013 in Nasarawa State.

Justice should not be replaced with forgiveness at all, if we want peace to reign all those involved in this massacre should be brought to justice because it is not only a crime against the law but a crime aainst humanity. These policemen were people's husbands, fathers and relatives and they have feelings too.
If the govt wants to stop such occurrence (killing of security men) from repeating itself, bringing the offenders to justice is the only way out.
