Founded in the USA in 1866 the Klu Klux Klan was created by post civil war veterans as a resistance movement to the Republican led effort to create political and economic equality for the blacks . The surge of the Klu Klux Klan was enhanced by bombings of churches,hanging of innocent black people by lynching,whipping of pregnant black women with cow whips, the murder of black legislators and all people black unlucky to be caught and other atrocities too horrific to mention .
By January 1871 we saw the reckoning of the clan in places like South Carolina where 500 clan members raided the prisons and killed all the black people in them.
By 1876 the clan had succeeded in ensuring complete white supremacy and dominance in all the southern states of the USA and a defeat of economic and political and social equality of the blacks as spearheaded by the Republican Party at the time.
The lure of the clan for the white populace was the fact that it cut across all facets of the society and hence the clan had policemen,judges,doctors and every single role model as members. Hence it was nearly impossible to even fathom taking on the clan .
Actually till this day it has not been eradicated in Nigeria.
