THE woes of the Speaker of the
Rivers State House of
Assembly,Mr.Otelemaba Dan
Amachree and the Chief of Staff
to the Governor, Mr. Tony
Okocha, are mounting sequel to
their allegation of a plot to kill
Governor Rotimi Amaechi. They
have been invited by the Police
for interrogation on account of
the allegation. The Police have
already withdrawn his security
details and those of Okocha. The
duo are Amaechi’s key backers
in the struggle for the soul of the
Rivers PDP. They had said the
withdrawal of their security
details was the first step in the
alleged plot to destabilise the
state and that the withdrawal of
the governor’s security details
would follow soon. In inviting
them,the State Commissioner of
Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu,
described the plot allegation as a
very serious issue. He said
contrary to what Mr.Amachree
wanted the world to believe,only
nine of the 24 policemen were
withdrawn and for other areas in
need of security beef-up. “The
Speaker has raised very serious
issues about security threats and
about the attempt to assassinate
the governor (Rivers), His
Excellency and the chief security
officer of this state. That is a very
serious issue and the speaker of
the House of Assembly will be
invited and will be interrogated
to give more facts and throw
light into this information,” Mbu
told reporters in Port Harcourt.”
He added: “: “He (speaker) has to
tell us how the chief executive of
this state; he has the
paraphernalia of security and
why should the director of SSS
(State Security Service), the
commissioner of police; why
should anybody withdraw
security from the governor of the
state? “The chief of staff to the
governor has also made
pronouncement to the effect that
there are plans to start bombing
places, bombing houses. This
also has to be investigated. He is
invited to the command by the
state CID (Criminal Investigation
Department). So that he will
throw more light on this grave
pronouncement. As the
chairman of internal security in
the state, I will not allow people
to make inflammatory
statements. “I know we have
child abuse. There is police
abuse in certain quarters here in
Rivers state. Everybody in
Government House wants to see
himself as a governor. The
speaker of Rivers state House of
Assembly has 15 personnel from
the Special Protection Unit of the
Nigeria Police. “As if those men
are not enough, he (Speaker) still
acquired nine from the mobile
police. So, only one person has 24
personnel of the Nigeria police
attached to himself. What I did
was that the special protection
unit, as the name implies, is to
protect government officials.
“What we try to do is to make
sure that every appointee or
political office holder gets what
he is entitled to. So that we can
have enough men to go on patrol.
The mobile police force is meant
for quelling riots, for insurgency
and for highprofile patrol. I was
once a commissioner of police in
charge of that department. “So, if
you withdraw nine men and you
still leave 15 men with the
Speaker, what else does he want?
Does he want to have police
personnel like the president of
Nigeria?” Amaechee, Okocha and
other top Rivers government
officials have been critical of
Mbu, accusing him of taking
sides in the PDP crisis. They want
him removed immediately. The
stripping of pro- Amaechi
government officials of police
cover started with the Chairman
of Okrika LG council Tamuno
Williams shortly after he
appeared on Channels Television
and spoke on political
developments in the state.. Mbu
soon withdrew the policemen
attached to the Commissioner for
Information and
Communications, Mrs. Ibim
Semenitari, after criticism of the
police boss.. Okocha, in his
response to the withdrawal of
policemen attached to him, said
it was aimed at exposing him to
danger. However,support came
yesterday from the Conference of
Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP)
Rivers State chapter which
pledged its backing for him in
the current challenge facing his
administration. The opposition
party leaders, on a solidarity
visit to the Governor in Port
Harcourt,expressed worry at
“recent increase in security
threats as a result of internal
problems from one political
party.” The CNPP Chairman,Dr.
Minaebi Dagogo Jack ,who led
the delegation said: “We hear of
crisis in the State House of
Assembly, we saw women
protesting here and there. “We
saw youths carrying placards
here and there in the state; the
electronic and print media
carrying stories of threat of all
kinds and most recently ‘bomb
blast’ within the premises of
Obio Akpor Local Government
Area. “We are aware, Sir, that
you are the leader of the PDP in
Rivers State and more
importantly the governor of the
state and so as partners of
progress we deemed it most
appropriate to pay you a visit
and to state that Rivers State does
not belong to one political party
alone.’’ Responding, Governor
Amaechi thanked the opposition
party leaders in the state for
their visit and support. He
pledged not to disappoint the
people of the state. Amaechi
described the current political
crisis in the state PDP as an act of
rascality but said the situation “
can be handled by government
and the people.”

This is getting interesting

They have had a number of petitions against those two. They have been using their security detail to harass anyone trying to support the new PDP executive. the latest was the owner of a hall, who agreed to let the new chairman hold a meeting there. The security aids attached to Okocha arrested him and gave him a good beating. Is that the job of security aids?

Amaechi and his people have been operating above the law for so long that they really don't know right from wrong any more.
