Reasons Why Pregnant Women Consume Food Rich In Sugar: How To Avoid It by emydedon: 3:56pm On May 21, 2013
One of the biggest problems why women like to consume sugar during pregnancy is because it is socially acceptable, unlike other habits. Many women are pressured to give up most of their habits for nine months due to concern for their baby's health and well-being. This is why many pregnant women give in to their cravings and eat sugary foods even if it may be unhealthy for them and the baby.

The Disadvantages of Excessive Sugar Intake

Eating foods with refined sugar is bad for anyone's health due to several reasons. Too much sugar intake causes extreme weight gain, gum disease, tooth decay, elevation in blood sugar, diabetes, and many more health problems. Pregnant women have greater risks of absorbing more sugar into the bloodstream. This causes their pancreas to work overtime to regulate blood pressure levels. If the pancreas fails, blood sugar levels will increase and cause many health problems, especially during pregnancy. This may even lead to gestational diabetes.

Healthy Alternatives

Due to the potential health issues they may encounter, pregnant women should be more careful when it concerns their health. There are healthy alternatives that can provide the sweet taste that pregnant women crave without consuming too much sugar. Some healthy options are fresh fruits that provide natural sweetness without added sugar. Honey and plain yogurt are other nutritious alternatives for the mother and baby. Instead of drinking soda, coffee, and other unhealthy beverages, fruit juice and fresh water is much better.

Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners can be added to specific foods and beverages to increase or maintain their sweetness without using real sugar. Aspartame is an example of an alternative sweetener for people who want to lessen their caloric intake. It is made up of two amino acids called aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The artificial sweetener is present in dietary beverages and sugar-free candy.

Staying Healthy During Pregnancy

Pregnant women must be cautious when choosing what to eat or drink to protect the health and development of the baby. The American Pregnancy Association notes that using aspartame is beneficial for individuals attempting to lose weight. Pregnant women must exert more effort if they want to stay healthy and fit. Pregnant women can drink beverages containing aspartame in moderation. Just like any other food products, too much intake will always be harmful to the body.

Pregnancy is one of the most difficult stages a woman may experience in her life. She must not only be concerned with her general health, but the well being of the child within her as well. Nurturing the health of the unborn child for 9 months is important for child labor and lesser risks. One of the best ways to stay health during pregnancy is to eat nutritional foods.

There may be some issues and debates related to aspartame and pregnancy, but many research materials and studies show that it is safe to use. For more assurance, pregnant women must discuss their food intake and the effects of aspartame with a doctor. This is to ensure they stay healthy and avoid unnecessary health problems during pregnancy.
