Group To Take Nigeria Government To International Court

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) will file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Nigeria’s government of human rights violations, according to spokesman Ango Abdullahi.

“What we are doing now is to organize our evidence that would make it possible for us to make a very strong case against the government and its agencies, or up to individuals who may be complicit, in terms of the human rights violations that have been taking place in the last few years,” said Abdullahi.

He said the group has put together a team of lawyers that has been gathering evidence indicating that national army soldiers were involved in the recent killing of civilians at Baga.

“There is sufficient evidence, from our point of view, in terms of human rights violations that have been going on with a lot of impunity in the last three years or so around the activities of the government and its agencies and around the country,” said Abdullahi. “I think it’s because nobody seems to really take the matter seriously to draw attention, not only to other parts of the world, to the Nigerian authorities themselves.”

But supporters of the government say the administration is mandated to protect unarmed civilians and resolve the country’s internal security crisis. They accused the NEF of failing to engage the government in its attempt to prevent violence, often carried out by members of the Islamist group, Boko Haram.

Abdullahi denies speculation that the Elders’ Forum is in any way linked to Boko Haram.

“We didn’t create the insurgents. It may have been created by somebody, but it is up to the government to prove a case that the insurgency has been created deliberately to cause havoc in the country,” said Abdullahi. “It happens that perhaps if there is any indication … that this matter has been politicized, it must have been politicized by the government or its agencies.”

Boko Haram, which is based in Nigeria’s north, has been accused of carrying out violent attacks in an attempt to force the country to adopt strict Islamic law.

Human Rights Watch says Boko Haram-related violence has killed an estimated 3,000 people since 2009, a toll that includes killings by security forces.

Abdullahi says the government has been unable to resolve the security threats members of Boko Haram pose to the country.

“If this sect had been treated like many other sects that we’ve had in this country for many years, perhaps we would not be where we are now,” continued said Abdullahi, “there [have been] thousands of people detained in terribly inhumane conditions all over the country. Among the thousands of people that have been in detention for many years now, only one as far as I know is in court now.”

Abdullahi says the Elders group has decided to hold the government accountable for the extrajudicial killings he says are sometimes carried out by military officials.

Perhaps those who lost their families, friends and love ones in the attack carried out by Boko harem might as well sue the Northern elders for supporting terrorism and treason. Where were they when those Boko Haram are killing innocent Nigerians in the North? Bunch of spineless Northern elders.

I'm less concerned with what NEF says or does to the government, anybody can file a complaint with the international court. They have raised some points which I will not support until have an evidence to back it up. And why is it now that the wanna file the complaint? Where were they when BH members were killing innocent people?

Anyway, my questions are these:

1) why are those PDP senators, caught red-handed with BH members, still free?

2) why hasn't anyone of these BH been tried and sentenced?

A serious war against BH should not take anything for granted. It was even an Hausa President, Late Yar'adua, who killed their leader so I cant't understand why GEJ is not brave enough to detain those senators. Yesterday the President also ordered the release of the dreaded group. Honestly, Something fishy is really going on here.

All over the media, these senators have been replaced with Buhari. Even here on NL, without proofs, everyone calls Buhari a sponsor. Are they really playing games with Nigerians, knowing that a large number of us vote based on emotions/sympathy ?

And all u presidential spokesmen, don't come here to saying that the president knows what he's doing. Same thing u said when he granted Alams pardon.

I am not a fan of GEJ .in fact , I dislike him like no other(my history on this forum will confirm this). However , these northern leaders should hide their heads in shame. In fact ,almost all of them. When awo was educating the western region( some classrooms were under tree, many in mud built classrooms),these idiots and their fathers were laughing at him.some were saying things like , "if you educate these people , where are the jobs for them to do". They were only interested in power or to loot the collective patrimony of their people and subjugating others.
After getting into power, they do not even attempt to use the power of the state to educate or help their people . No urgency ,nothing. They are only too eager to build grand palaces, cities ,sponsor pilgrimages to Mecca and sponsoring marriages of kids to grandpas.
Ahmadu bello rather elevating his people was too busy giving himself awards and putting unqualified people in positions above their stations; While keeping everybody else down. All this ,while formenting trouble elsewhere. These are the heroes past and present they want me to hail in the national anthem.
Go to the northwest and northeast, there are teachers from Egypt being paid top dollars to educate the children of the few at tax payer's expense while first class graduates from the south are looking for work.
How is that going to create wealth?how is that society suppose to last?
Any of these states can be turned around educationally within 10 years. You do not need the useless federal government to do it for you.I do not think I can see any of them doing anything that can be remotely considered as a revolution in education.they are only too happy to think of themselves as being gloriously ordained or morally superior.Playing polo ,drinking choice wines, driving luxurious cars on tax payers expense while leaving their people to rot in poverty and illiteracy. (Not much different in other parts of nigeria but a lil bit better than the north )
Afterward ,Boko haram like all the other fanatical terrorist group from the northern part of the country come in to fill the void.
Boko is the baby of the northwest and northeast.until they decide to eradicate the menace of illiteracy and fanaticism ,they will have to live with this baby.
The northern elite should borrow a word from the boko haram .that word is JIHAD.
HOWEVER ,THEY SHOULD WAGE THEIR JIHAD ON ILLITERACY ,EXTREMISM AND A LACK OF RESPECT FOR SECULAR LAW SO THAT THE CHILDREN OF THE POVERTY STRICKEN MASSES CAN HAVE A SHOT AT THE KIND OF LIFE THEIR POLO PLAYING ,ROLLS ROYCE DRIVING,CUBAN CIGAR SMOKING,CHAMPAGNE LOVING CHILDREN.
ONE OTHER THING -THEY SHOULD BIN AND EXPUNGE THAT SHARIA BULLSHIT. IT IS UNAFRICAN ,YOU WILL LOSE YOUR IDENTITY AND IT WILL NEVER TAKE YOU ANYWHERE . JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE OF DARFUR ARE LEARNING , YOU MIGHT ALSO LOSE YOUR HOMELAND.
