First Lady Seeks End To Teenage Pregnancies In Africa

The First Lady and President of African First Ladies Peace Mission, Dame Patience Jonathan, has canvassed for the reduction of teenage pregnancies across Africa. Dame Patience Jonathan stated this at the just concluded National Strategy seminar for the reduction of teenage pregnancies in Sierra Leone, with the theme, “Let Girls Be Girls, Not Mothers.”

In a press statement signed by the Media Adviser to the First Lady, Omoba Kenneth Aigbegbele, Patience Jonathan called for a synergy and partnership between the traditional institutions, religious leaders and opinion leaders on the essence of working together with civil society organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Delivering a keynote address on “The Roles of Traditional and Religious Leaders in the prevention of teenage pregnancies,” the First Lady noted that the role of traditional and religious leaders in supporting communities to prevent teenage pregnancy cannot be overemphasised.

She said that sustainable development can only be achieved in the fight against teenage pregnancies if our traditional leaders will return to the dignity and high moral values that had held our traditional communities together. Emphasising on the core roles of these leaders in uniting and developing the society, she encouraged them to take interest in the upbringing of teenage boys as well, but more especially, the girls in their domains; preparing both genders adequately for the responsibilities of adulthood.

She further stressed the need for town hall meetings for the continuous community sensitisation programmes about the dangers of teenage pregnancies, saying that educating the teenagers would prevent them from being misled.

Patience Jonathan appealed to both religious and traditional leaders to continually work with parents and civil society organisations as well as other relevant groups to create the necessary awareness in preventing this malaise that is destroying the future of female teenagers.

All well meaning people need to throw their weight behind this noble cause.

It is time to implement a comprehensive child-rights act, so please lend your support to Madam Patience on this one.

Not funny, try harder.
Girl child education is another key to achieving a reduction in number of girl mothers, not just rallying round traditional rulers who are the actual offenders.

How many pregnant teenagers get to finish school?

Convention on the Rights of the Child
In adopting the Convention, the international community recognized that people under 18 years of age often need special care and protection that adults do not. To help stem the growing abuse and exploitation of children worldwide, the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 adopted two Optional Protocols to the Convention to increase the protection of children from involvement in armed conflicts and from sexual exploitation.

There is plenty of information out there for those who really care about this issue.

Kids bearing kids: The story of teenage pregnancy in Nigeria
SHE is well known in the Orisunbare-Alarere community of Old Ife road, Ibadan, Oyo State where she resides. A 16-year-old who looks like a 24-year-old, Helen is known to be outspoken and forward. She has completed her SS3 examination and has a good result. The young lady, who resides with her parents, suddenly ‘disappeared’ from the community and the general thinking was that she had gained admission into a higher institution.

According to a World Bank report published in 2010, the adolescent fertility rate (births per 1,000 women ages 15-19) in Nigeria was 115.53 in 2009, while it was 116.92 in 2008.

Lots of incidents of teenage pregnancy abound, which ordinarily could have been averted through sexuality education, volunteered Mrs. Omotola Ojo, a mother and nurse by profession.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, Ojo, noted that lack of sexuality education had been the major cause of teenage pregnancy. The mother of four children admonished parents to be free with their children and teach, “as in teaching in the real sense of the word”, their children and wards sexuality education.

“The world is far more advanced than for mothers to be lying to their children about their private organs, calling them insects or other names than what they are. Let your children know the real names of their private organs, the purposes they serve and why they should not indulge in sexual activities now.

No specifics, just bland rubbish.

She should tell her husband and his troop of lower level primates to invest in:

- primary and secondary education infrastructure (why is the budget high on recurring but low on capital expenditure)

- health care (including preventative care)

- power generation and transmission

- provide jobs for the young and the working class

She and her damned husband are just a huge embarrassment!

Re: Patience Seeks End To Teenage Pregnancies In Africa by Nobody: 10:07am On May 27, 2013
madam, how do you intend to achieve this?
can you achieve this in a continent filled with poverty stricken people?

one of the major cause of teenage pregnancy is poverty, and lack of enlightenment on the part of the people.

invest in human capitalization, then other positive indices would fall into place naturally.

stop chasing shadows ma.
