The Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi has said that the process of selecting who govern the oil rich state would rotate among the different ethnic groups in the area.

The Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi
The governor disclosed this on Thursday while receiving thousands of delegates from Etche ethnic group, who had paid him a solidarity visit at government house in Port Harcourt in support of his administration.

”Any area that has produced governor before should go and sleep and allow other areas to produce,’ Mr Amaechi said.

He called for the setup of Etche Enlightenment Committee to educate and mobilise the people on the need to exercise their voting power in the next elections.

He insisted that the people’s vote must count since that is one way the Rivers people will elect their leaders independently without external influence in 2015.

While blaming the current political crisis in the state on some detractors, the governor said his administration is poised to do more for the Etche people promising that his administration will not abandon them.

The Chairman of the Etche traditional rulers council, Emmanuel Opurum said Governor Amaechi’s administration is godsend as Etche people has witnessed unprecedented development since his inception.

Mr Opurum stressed that the Etche people will ever remain loyal and support the Amaechi-led government in Rivers state.

The same view was held by the member House of Representatives for Etche/Omuma constituency, Ogbonna Nwuke, who read the address of the group as he commended the governor for defending the territory and property of the state, further submitting that Governor Amaechi’s recent victory as Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) chairman underscores his popularity and acceptance by the people.

Mr Nwuke pledged the support of the people of Etche, emphasizing that the good deeds of the governor in the area is indeed enough to attract the people’s total backing for his administration.

How does he intend to rotate it, if I may ask?

May be he want to circumvent the wish of the majority voters by selecting his successor by whatever means.

Anyway, his intention is a good one but let him allow the electorates to decide both in internal party primary and in the general election.

For those who didn't know, the major reason for all attacks on Amaechi and plans to seize Rivers PDP is because there is a preferred candidate from someone extremely close to the Presidency against the earlier agreed Ogoni for 2015. I've written it earlier that Amaechi is not contesting for either President or VP as these people falsely rumored. Amaechi is coming out for Rivers East senatorial seat.

And I thot Amaechi was a good leader. How could he make such statement? He even contradicted himself wen he said it would be rotational and dat since it was d turn of d etche community, they should go and start canvassing the pple to vote for them. What if they dnt present a credible candidate and the pple want to vote in credibility and nt his degenerated ethnic game? He's turnin to a dictator slowly. Who d cap fits let him wear it.

Ethnicity should not be a factor to be considered in electing the next governor. Gov. Amaechi, what happens to merit?

Ngwakwe: How does he intend to rotate it, if I may ask?

There was an agreement in 1999 that after Ogba/Ndoni comes Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche in that order before it goes riverine again. That's the cause of all these problems. Someone wants her brother there in 2015. Ikwerre is by far the largest ethnic group in Rivers State and hold 50% of the voting population while when combined with other upland people + Igbos are up to 80% of the population. So they hold the key.

Nigeria politicians and their chameleonic tendencies! Same Amaechi who couldn't allow the Chairmanship position of the Nigeria Governors Forum to rotate back to the north as originally agreed by the founding members of the forum is now the one pontificating on power rotation

There was no such agreement and it was Northerners that even voted him again. Amaechi honors agreements unlike some other politicians.

There was a gentleman agreement if you don't know, that's why previous occupants of the sit were consensus candidates, and not product of any election. Amaechi himself was a product of the agreement.

I won't say you are wrong but if there were anything like this, 35 of them wouldn't have voted.

What other proof do you want? Amaechi's seeking re-election put paid to the extant arrangement where the chairmanship position rotates between the North and South.

The only governor that was approved for second term in the history of NGF was nominated and collectively endorsed by all members and not via any kangaroo election

Abagworo is more in tune with the reality in Rivers State. Its the turn of the Ogonis to produce a governor but some people some where have bad intentions.

Hmmm not again...Whoever is saying 'one' Nigeria is either drunk or confused, when we can't even boast of 'one' state let alone 'one' Nigeria, when every region/local govt/tribe in a state is planing to produce the next governor, whether they have someone competent or not. Naija and our tribal/regional politics...SMH

The NGF election ought to have come up earlier in February, before it was postponed to May. One of the contentious issue that warrant the postponement was the injection of an electoral clause into the NGF constitution by Amaechi as against the status quo.

This is what brought about the voting system, and even at that, there were further issues of Amaechi presiding over an election he was a contestant.

Every time agreement, agreement. Agreement amongst who? Whenever they want to satisfy their corrupt ego they throw merit to the winds at the detriment of the electorates. I am so sorry for this country. Let every candidate who feels he or she is capable present his or her intent to the people and let the poll results decide.

Ok, but you and I know that this is a none issue in electoral process in Nigeria. I see no reason why the 16 governors that voted for Jang went ahead having seen Gov. Amaechi was not ready to quit before conducting the election. I still believe that 16 is a good number and it wouldn't have been out of order if they boycott the election.

Abiye Sekibo, whom Patience and GEJ wants as Rivers Governor in 2015 has resigned his ACN membership in other to be the PDP governorship candidate in the state which is against the earlier agreement of an ogoni man.

Ameachi pls sale Rivers Governorship to an opposition party the same way Tinubu did in lagos.

In responding to the bold part, will love to quote the response of the Ondo State governor “There were two options open to us:  Either we walked out. But if we had walked out, there is a viral input in that constitution which also says that the quorum is 12.

“So, if we had walked out, there was no guarantee that certain people wouldn’t have sat down there and called the press to witness a ‘free and fair election.’ ...

@Op, hope I'm not derailing the thread ...

I love this move by ameachi. Enough of this igbos called ikwerres who claim to be riverines running rivers state. It is time for the real riverines like the bonny,kalabari,andoni;abua;etc...to take control of their state. I do not know how it will be made possible but by ameachi just aknowledging it, is a great step.
