FG to include herbal medicine in medical curriculum

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said that herbal medicine will be made part of the nation’s medical curriculum, to ensure standard in the health profession.

Chukwu said this on Thursday in Abuja at the Ministerial Platform on the mid-term report of progress and achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan, organised by the Ministry of Information.

He observed that the idea by people using herbs thinking that they have found cure for HIV/AIDS, without medical evidence, hindered growth of the nation’s health sector.

He said that although there were research institutes across the country, plan was underway by the ministry, to inculcate herbal medicine in the medical curriculum, in line with international best practices.

“Research is important; we have research through major research institutes, they have been a lot of research on malaria, cholera epidemic, non-communicable diseases,” he said. “Now, anytime the ministry gets people who say they have found the cure for HIV/AIDS, I write to the D-G National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).

If you go today you will see people who are working, they are analysing what Nigerians are plagued with, and the only thing is that medicine has to be evidence based. But we must move ahead in this country; we have done enough research to prove that yes there some goodness in some other thing. Take for instance the issue of traditional medicine, why have we not moved forward? It is because we do many things that we can’t cope with. So herbal medicine is going to be in the medicine school and that is where we can truly say we have captured that aspect.”

The minister warned people from patronising paramedics, by thinking that herbal practitioners were paramedics, adding that doing so contributed to health damages. He explained that the paramedics’ profession was not a volunteering service, but that people acquired the skills through proper medical training

Nice development. It's high time we started utilizing the abundant herbs, barks and roots we've got all around us. Our forefathers used those and they lived long and healthy.

Let's go back to the ways of our forefathers!!

Yea. I was present in the hall when the Health Minister made that statement early this week. I believe it is a very welcome developement. We need to start training out Doctors (and also Pharmacists) to look inwards more in their search for better medicines to treat ailments. Orthodox medicine does not hold all the keys.

Do you even know what you're saying?
Do you know what medical students in nigeria are already suffering?

Do you know how cumbersome only anatomy is?

I'm not against the FG's initiative o! Buh abeg they should create another department for that.

who will do the lecturing ..professors that did not study herbal medicine? Or real specialist in herbal medicine that have not been opportuned to get letters after their name? I hope its the latter.

While we are on the matter of going back to our roots, is it not time our lawyers remove that disgusting colonial mentality wig from their heads?

Great. Who knows if through this, Nigeria would discover cures for Hiv, cancer and the likes. The potentials are high. Finally Okija Juju would get to be popular and wear suit for the first time. Lol

Advantages of herbal medicine
1-Cheaper
2-Source of new drugs or precursors of new drugs
3-Accessible to everyone especially to the people in the rural areas.
4-Wider acceptability even in areas where orthodox medicine is not acceptable because it's related to the culture of the people.
5-Source of additional manpower to the health system
6-herbal remedies have a greater likelihood of being accepted by the body than those synthesized in the laboratory
Embrace herbal medicine today grin grin grin

Lagos state tried integration of the two systems some years ago.it failed woefully..
Bringing herbal medicine into the curriculum wont make ur anatomy less cubersome..
And when I mean the white labcoat fellas,i dont mean medical students but those already in practice(doctors, pharmacists, nurses e.t.c)

Are the leaves not around anymore? This is the problem with us as a people losing our culture and turning our backs on local remedies. For this reason I say thumbs up to the FG for making herbal treatments/remedies a part of medical training. It makes no sense for us to have cheap local cures but instead go for very expensive foreign pharmaceutical medications which almost never cure any ailment and have serious side effects.Local diseases local treatments.
