Human sacrifice victims were POWs and criminals who would anyways be put to death as was the custom of war all over the world in those days. so whats the difference between killing at the gallows or sacrificing in the altar? its the same, except that this served added rewards.
Sacrifice is essential however as Pagans we believe that animals, humans, etc., are all equal as living creations of the Creator. so if a animal is sacrificed then why not a human? this is how it worked. the higher and more complex the living things soul, the more potent was the sacrifice.
