Nigerians have for sometime been talking about the office of the first lady, how constitutional or otherwise the position is, whether the spouse of the male incumbent of the presidency should be heard, seen, unheard or unseen. Let us attempt to prove now just how relevant or irrelevant the first lady's office is and my first question is, What will happen when in the near future the president of Nigeria is a woman? Will the husband also become the first man? If he wont and there's in history anywhere in the world a name like 'office of the first man' in any jurisdiction, it then means to me that calling the wife of Nigeria's President the first lady or appropriating some functions to that office too are illegal, wrong and unconstitutional. Again the puzzle is - if your wife beomes the president of Nigeria tomorrow, would you, the husband, accept to be called 'the first man' and be grandstanding as such when you know there is no such office? If therefore you, the husband cannot be called 'first man' when your wife had become the president, why do you think your wife should be called, addressed and act the 'first lady' with the official seal and gallivanting authority and functions to perform when you the husband becomes president? Please let us have your contributions on this topic.
