The federal government has said that Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, did not act outside his constitutional jurisdiction in the execution of four death row inmates in the state. The reaction by the federal government is sequel to the Monday execution of Osaremwinda Aigbuohian, Daniel Nsofor, and two others in Edo State, a situation that generated both local and international criticisms.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja during the stakeholders consultative forum on the 2nd cycle of Nigeria’s Universal Periodic Review, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, said that the constitution and the criminal code were handed over to Nigeria during the colonial administration.

He emphasised that the constitution remained the guiding principle to the nation, saying Nigeria should not shy away to what is right according to the dictates of the constitution

“In Edo state, what happened recently has nothing to do with the federal government. We have a constitution where the states are autonomous.

“Don’t forget the constitution was followed by review but the criminal code that we are using was handed over to us by the colonial powers and it is when the constitution is reviewed that the status quo will be reviewed.

“So, there are areas where governors have authorities and in this case, that was what happened in Edo State where the governor exercised the constitutional provision to sign the execution that is there.

“I think the governor of Edo State, acted within his constitutional power.

“So, don’t shy away to what we believed is right and what we believe is in the constitution. We have a constitution and it is our constitution that will guide us. When we look around, it is our constitution that will guide us,” Ashiru said.

Ok... It's good to know he did the right thing constitutionally. If It were to be the opposition party and most expecially uncle Lai, I bet they would waste no time in pointing accusing fingers at him and politicizing the whole issue.

Think this is fair. Though i would not recommend this. The question i ask is why would the presidency encourage this and not use the same tactic of firing squad for boko haram. It will make the terrorists think twice.

Word of Advice....Crime Kills! Those guys got served, I can imagine what now runs through the minds of prisoners in other state prisons with similar offense. Back in the day Criminal minded youths were tamed with the fear of being arrested orexecuted by hanging or firing squad, then a police man with a baton can control a large motorpark but now even 5 police cannot achieve such feat with guns. Nigeria youth and adult pls stay away from evil. E no dey pay!

Not just FG, Majority of Nigerians did support this, What we keep appealing for is a situation where the capital punishment transcends the selective focus of the talakawas as it is to the so-called bourgeoisies and elites because take it or leave it , they remain the problem that the capital punishment need to cater for .

Emotions are natural and normal for everyone to exhibit, but the law is the law. Giving acid to a baby of four months and butchering of ones fellow creature(another man)are evil.

I don't understand the furore over the executions. They're just four guys. If an accident occured and these same four people died nobody will hear about their death.

That is a quite display of maturity from the FG. The opposition should learn how to show support when the right thing is done. You can imagine what the opposition would be saying if this was actually carried out by the the FG. I don't like GEJ or PDP. But, then, I hate ACN/APC and all their bunch of liars, crooks and hypocrites. I can't wait for 2015 to show them just that.

certainly, if there are constitutional provisions. Again, you can call on your Senator/Rep. to sponsor a bill in NASS in this regard.
