Germany produced a record 23.9 gigawatts of electricity yesterday from thousands of solar photovoltaic systems yesterday, according to SMA Solar Technology.

Despite setting yet another solar world record, the collapse of Germany’s solar energy industry seems to be spreading downstream from manufacturers to distributors and installers.

On Friday, Gehrlicher Solar and Conergy, two of Germany’s leading downstream solar power companies, filed for insolvency.

In 2011, Gehrlicher Solar, a wholesale distributor of photovoltaic components that also offers engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for solar projects, reported $415 million in revenues.

Meanwhile, the collapse of Conergy comes after two failed efforts to close a new round of investment to support a shift in Conergy’s go-to-market strategy to focus on downstream solar project development and distribution.

“In the last fifteen months, we have presented two concrete concepts on the investment by investors to our lenders,” Dr. Philip Comberg, CEO of Conergy told PV-Tech. “We very much regret that they repeatedly could not reach a reliable agreement on a timely implementation of the proposal. Without a solid capital structure, however, Conergy Group cannot continue its course for growth as planned.”

Only a few weeks ago, Siemens SI +3.51%, the industrial conglomerate based in Munich, Germany, said it was shutting down its solar power division after enduring nearly $1 billion in losses over the past two years. Similarly, Bosch also recently said it was exiting the solar energy market after suffering significant losses.

Dont you think we need them to help us? If we are battling with 4000 how about gigawatts.

@Post

They should bring them to Nigeria so that they can help us with our ever persistent epileptic power supply issue.

23.9 Gigawatts = 23,900 Megawatts.

......and Nigeria struggles with 4,000 megawatts for 160 million people.

That figure is only power generated from solar installations. The total power generations from nuclear, hydro, coal , gas, solar, etc in Germany are over 800,000 Megawatts! What Nigeria generates cannot power Munich or Stuttgart.
Small Austria with about 8 million population has over 100,000 Megawatts!

Yesterday, an oil refinery company in the South West city of Karlsruhe, said it's about to start building a 1,200 megawatts gas power plant near its headquarters.
Germany's electricity giant ENBW, is also investing in the project. Germans use waste to generate power; the recent buzz is their ability to harness heats from earth's deep pool thousands of metres below for electricity generation.

Certainly our power generation, transmission and distribution system is dismal due to several years of neglect, corruption, lack of adequate funding, etc. A serious state/country cannot industrialise without adequate power infrastructure. Currently our national transmission system cannot handle more than about 5,000 megawatts, though the government seems to be working on improving the transmission infrastructure albeit slowly.

Germany is the power house of Europe. They intend to face-out the use of nuclear energy by 2020/2025 and make full (100%) use of renewable energy by 2050 while our leaders are fighting over the leadership of NGF and other mundane issues.

yESU kRISTI.

That is 23,900 MegaWatts. Meanwhile we have 'spent' more that $100 billion and is still struggling with 4000MW.

I guess it is as a result of cheap imports (dumping) from China. I wonder why Bosch isn't in Nigeria.

4 000 megawatts can also be called 4 gigawatts. Stop deceiving people with units.
