Bayelsa Cant Sustain N4.3bn Monthly Wage Bill- Dickson by EkoIle1: 3:12pm On Jul 21, 2013 |
The Bayelsa State Governor stated this on Friday.
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said the state government’s wage bill of N4.3 billion for June was too much and unsustainable.
The governor stated this when he presented the financial profile of the state for June at the monthly transparency media briefing on Friday in Yenagoa. According to him, expending N4.3 billion on workers’ salaries is unsustainable for the economy of Bayelsa.
He said that the state government’s wage bills “over the months remain a sour point in our financial balance sheet’’.
“I disagree with this figure of N4.3billion because it is not sustainable for our economy.
“We must come together and do something urgently to reduce this figure. We have to do something if we must grow our economy,’’ Mr. Dickson said.
The governor said that N2.6 billion was received by the state government as statutory allocation from the federation account for the month of June.
He said the total derivation of the state was N9.39 billion, and that the total financial inflow to the state stood at N19.09 billion.
Mr. Dickson further explained that while the state government had continued to spend huge amount of money to run the government, the internally-generated revenue (IGR) remained minimal. He said the IGR of the state for the month of June was N645.39million.
“While we complain of the huge burden of our workers’ salary, our internal-generated revenue had remained poor; we must strive to improve it,’’ he said.
He said the government had in the past one month spent N250 million on payment of money owed retired civil servants by the previous administration.
Mr. Dickson said that after making all the payments and deductions, N25.26 billion was left in the coffers of the state as balance at hand. http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/141356-bayelsa-cant-sustain-n4-3bn-monthly-wage-bill-governor-dickson.html |

A state with less than 2 million people spending N4.3 billion on workers salary? Even Lagos state with 20 million people and the second largest workforce in Nigeria spends little over N5 billion on workers salary.
Obviously, they have too many ghost and ogbanje government workers... 25 Likes |

Bayelsa state is a basket case.. Let us Assume that the state employs 20,000 people(no even close, a state for whom ,the federal government had to build an ordinary general hospital) Total recurrent expenditure per month : 4.3 billion naira.
Average salary /worker : 4.3 billion divided by 20000
Average salary : 215 ,000 naira per worker
Impossible.
Bayelsa has one of the smallest civil service in nigeria. It is also the most corrupt state with a fraudulent pupulation census count.
Just to show here that this state called bayelsa is capable of employing 20000 people and pay them at least 215,000 naira. |

What do you expect from a state where there is high level of illiteracy, joblessness and increased rate of crime ? A state where most of the citizens are put on government pay roll only to be paid for taming the hooliganism in them or resort to crime and when they are challenged, what they tell you is that they own the "OYEL"
Dickson should stop complaining and let his ijaw people enjoy themselves afterall they(the ijaws) own the "OYEL" and the money is their "OYEL" money. They are not interested in infastructural development but their stomach ! 14 Likes |

Seriake Dickson aka The rumor-mongering Governor Apparently, his solution to this problem is to appoint more special advisers. https://www.nairaland.com/1367346/bayelsa-state-governor-makes-mbgn#16938779Last night, he appointed the new MBGN pageant winner as the Special adviser on Culture & Tourism. What a joker. And this is the best man 'Uncle Jona' could find to govern his state. He should begin reducing the wage bill by deducting Mrs. Umblerra's permanent secretary position's wages and allowances. |

Lots of hippos, mamy watas, manatees, lobsters, shrimps, crabs, crocs, and many other aquatic residents, are under the pay role of the government! I laugh when the same people come round to shriek marginalization. Having your son as the President can never develop your people as much as having a pragmatic and hardworking Governor.
With the resources at its disposal, small landmass and low population, Bayelsa should be the Dubai of Nigeria. But a visit to the place will show you the pitiable living conditions of the ordinary people.
Almost all the decent buildings/hotels in Yenagoa belong to one serving or former government functionary. All those that have served as Commissioners have obscene mansions in and/or outside the state; not to talk of governors.
How, for heaven's sake, can the wage bill of small Bayelsa be up to N4.3billion? It's good that Mr Dickson has revealed it but the real test of his leadership lies in what happens afterwards. Note that Seriake himself has made many useless and obtuse appointments, including that of Permanent Secretary Patience Jonathan, which are draining the state's purse.
Honestly, that tiny but resource-rich state is poor in terms of resourceful leaders. Ironically, Alamieyeseigha, who recorded more feats than all the governors who succeeded him, was even convicted of treasury looting. His pardon by Jonathan, also a former Bayelsa governor, flies in the face of justice and is symptomatic of what is wrong with Bayelsa, Niger Delta, and Nigeria.
So, I ask, is it until Nigeria breaks up that Niger Delta would be emancipated or when its local leaders decide to do what's right? 9 Likes |
