asslm alykm what is to be given bn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made giving a saa’ of dates or a saa’ of barley as Zakaat al-Fitr an obligation for all Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and ordered that it should be given before the people went out to pray (Salaat al-Eid).” (Al-Bukhaari, 1503). Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “We used to pay as Zakaat al-Fitr a saa’ of food or a saa’ of barley (which was their food at that time) or a saa’ or dates or a saa’ of aqit (dried yoghurt) or a saa’ of raisins.” (1506) From this it is clear that Zakaat al-Fitr must be food, not money, so we must adhere to what has been recorded in the Sunnah. So give one saa’ of whatever is the staple food( ie most routinely eaten food) in your country, such as rice or wheat, even meat, for example, on behalf of yourself and each member of your household. (A saa’ is equivalent to approximately 3 kilograms). It is not permissible to give it to anyone except a needy Muslim. who If you cannot find anyone in your own country, you can delegate someone else to give it on your behalf in another country. when bn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is accepted zakaah (i.e., zakaat al-fitr), and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity.” Hence it is known that the earliest time when it may be given, according to the more correct of the two scholarly views, is the night of the 28th of Ramadaant till before eid prayer, because the month may be twenty-nine or thirty days. The companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to give it one or two days before Eid. # questions are welkomed on presented issues can be discussed further. May Allah (S.W.T) provide for us and enable us fulfill our duties to Him. 11 Likes |

BetaThings: Sadaqat al-Fitr is a duty which is wajib (required) of every Muslim, whether male or female, minor or adult as long as he/she "has" the means to do so. And The head of the household will pay the required amount for his dependents. |

The main purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to provide the poor with a means with which they can celebrate the festival of breaking the fast (`Eid al-Fitr) along with the rest of the Muslims. Every Muslim is required to pay Zakat al-Fitr at the conclusion of the month of Ramadan as a token of thankfulness to God for having enabled him or her to observe the obligatory fast. |

Zakat al-Fitr is only Wajib for a particular period of time. If one misses the time period without a good reason, he has sinned and can not make it up. This form of charity becomes obligatory from sunset on the last day of fasting and remains obligatory until the beginning of `Eid Prayer (i.e. shortly after sunrise on the following day). However, it can be paid prior to the above mentioned period, as many of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet) used to pay Sadaqah al-Fitr a couple days before the `Eid.[1] The amount of Zakat is the same for everyone regardless of their different income brackets. The minimum amount is one sa` (four double handfuls ) of food, grain or dried fruit for each member of the family. This calculation is based on Ibn 'Umar's report that the Prophet made Zakat al-Fitr compulsory and payable by a sa` of dried dates or a sa` of barley. Cash equivalent (of the food weight) may also be given if food collection and distribution is unavailable in that particular country. The distribution of Zakat al-Fitr is the same as that of Zakah, and is included within its broader sense. Those who may receive Zakat al-Fitr are the eight categories of recipients mentioned in Surat Al-Tawbah, [9: 60]. They include: 1) the poor 2) the needy, 3) collectors of Zakah, 4) reconciliation of hearts, 5) freeing captives / slaves(fee al-Riqab), 6) debtors 7) in the Way of Allah / Islamic causes (fee sabeel illah) the traveler. Zakat al-Fitr must go to the above-mentioned categories. The Zakat al-mal cannot be used for any other such things either. 2 Likes |

Re: Zakaat Al-fitr (the Personal Obligatory Charity) by DevotedOne(m): 2:58pm On Jul 31, 2013 |
Bismillaah. As salaamu alaykum. Apparently, there is some difference between zakat al fitr during Eid, and zakat al fitr, on one's wealth. I pray that I'm not giving too much unnecessary information here: "But if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (of Ramadan days) should be made up from days later. For those who cannot do this except with hardship is a ransom: the feeding of one that is indigent.... Allah intends every ease for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties...." (Quran 2:184-185). Islamic scholars have summarized the rules as follows: If someone has a chronic health condition that is not expected to resolve, one should share in charity enough to feed one person for each day of the fasting month. If someone deliberately breaks the fast, or misses a day of fasting for no legitimate reason, it is also necessary to also make up the missed day later. In the case when someone breaks the fast by engaging in sexual intercourse, one must also observe a penalty: fasting 60 continuous days, or feeding 60 poor people. http://islam.about.com/od/ramadan/f/makingup.htm Islam Q&A Fatwa 145558 - Principles of Fiqh » Jurisprudence and Islamic Rulings » Acts of Worship » Poor-due or obligatory charity » Charity at End of Ramadan. Is it permissible to give zakaat al-fitr two years in advance by analogy with the zakaah on one’s wealth? Is it permissible to give zakaat al-fitr two years in advance by analogy with giving zakaah of one’s wealth two years in advance? Praise be to Allah. The time when zakaat al-fitr becomes obligatory begins at sunset on the last day of Ramadan. The Sunnah indicates that it is permissible to give it one or two days before the day of Eid. See the answer to question no. 37636 The Hanafis are of the view that an analogy may be drawn between zakaah of one’s wealth and zakaat al-fitr, so they say that it is permissible to bring it forward. As-Sarkhasi said in al-Mabsoot, 3/110: The correct view in our opinion is that bringing it (zakaat al-fitr) forward by one or two years is permissible. End quote. However, what appears to be the case is that bringing it forward ahead of the time prescribed in sharee‘ah is not permissible. There are two significant differences between zakaat al-fitr and zakaah on one’s wealth: 1. The reason for zakaat al-fitr becoming obligatory is sunset on the last day of Ramadan, whereas the reason for zakaah on one’s wealth becoming obligatory is possession of the nisaab (minimum threshold of wealth at which zakaah becomes obligatory). Bringing something forward and doing it before the reason for it comes into effect is not permissible. Hence if a person hastens to pay zakaah on his wealth before he has possession of the nisaab, that is not acceptable. Ash-Shiraazi said in al-Muhadhdhab: It is not valid to pay it in advance before the month of Ramadan, because that is bringing it forward and doing it before the two reasons for it [i.e., fasting and sunset on the last day of Ramadan]. That is like paying zakaah on one’s wealth before one has acquired the nisaab and one full (hijri) year has passed since that date. End quote. See: Manzoomat Usool al-Fiqh wa Qawaa‘idihi by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, p. 143 2. The purpose behind zakaat al-fitr is make the poor independent of means on the day of Eid, but this purpose is not met if zakaat al-fitr is brought forward. That is unlike zakaah on one’s wealth, the purpose of which is to make the poor independent of means in general terms and is not limited to a specific time. There is also a third way in which we may differentiate between them, which is: zakaat al-fitr is a small amount, so it does not serve a great purpose for the poor person if it is brought forward, unlike zakaah on one’s wealth. And Allah knows best. Islam Q&A |

Salam alaykum I don't think a student who is struggling to mk ends meet should be mandated to pay Zakat al ftri. My husbsnd usually pays to the central mosque on behalf of myself, kids and the security man, who we feed during Ramadan. My question though is, should I also pay since he has paid on my behalf as I'm also working. May Allah accept our Ibadah in this season and always. 1 Like |

Asslm alykm, srry nno offense i'm jst trying to get some cleared Bsmartt: asalam alaykum. can a student without a specific source of income who is an adult pay zakat? i think that would be subject to if he/she has a kind of wealth or saving e.g inheritance or mahr, that reaches the nisab and he or she hold for up to a year. if the conditions are not there, then can give as sadaqah jhorkeh: Zakat al-Fitr is only Wajib for a particular period of time. If one misses the time period without a good reason, he has sinned and can not make it up. This form of charity becomes obligatory from sunset on the last day of fasting and remains obligatory until the beginning of `Eid Prayer (i.e. shortly after sunrise on the following day). However, it can be paid prior to the above mentioned period, as many of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet) used to pay Sadaqah al-Fitr a couple days before the `Eid.[1]got this from islamqa Can zakaat al-fitr be given to people other than the poor and needy, among the eight categories of people mentioned in the Qur’an (to whom zakaah may be given)? Praise be to Allah. There is a difference of scholarly opinion concerning this matter. The Shaafa‘is are of the view that the categories of people to whom zakaat al-fitr may be given are the same as those to whom zakaah on one’s wealth may be given. The Maalikis are of the view that zakaat al-fitr is only for the poor and needy. This view was also favoured by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah and Ibn al-Qayyim; among contemporary scholars it was favoured by Shaykh Ibn Baaz. (May Allah have mercy on them all) It says in Haashiyat ad-Dasooqi (1/506): Zakaat al-fitr may be given to any poor, free Muslim except a Haashimi (descendant of Banu Haashim), but it may not be given to one who works in collecting it, those whose hearts are to be softened towards Islam, for freeing slaves, or to a debtor, mujaahid, or a wayfarer to help him get home; rather it is prescribed specifically for the poor. End quote. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This opinion has the strongest evidence. End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Shaykh al-Islam, 25/71 Ibn al-Qayyim said in Zaad al-Ma‘aad (2/22): It was the teaching of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) to single out the poor for receipt of this charity; he did not share it out among the eight categories (of those who are entitled to zakaah), and he did not issue instructions to that effect, and his Companions and those who came after them did not do that either. Rather one of the two opinions in our view is that it is not permissible to give it to anyone except the poor in particular. This view is stronger than the view that it must be divided among the eight categories. Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is to be given to the poor and needy, because of the proven report from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle and obscene talk, and to feed the poor. End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa, 14/202 And Allah knows best. 1 Like |

The General: As salaam alaykum, It may be too preemptive of you, my brother, to JUDGE it to be "WRONG". The question arises that "upon whom is the Zakat-l-fitri obligatory? It is obligatory upon "any MUSLIM who have the FINANCIAL MEANS TO DO SO. The Fard status of this is not waived because you are student or not. The father of the student is giving one sa'a because he has to pay it upon those who are dependant on him while the student pays if he has reached the age of discernment,is not poor or needy and have the Financial means as a MUSLIM who has fasted and needs to be purified too. Some students are richer than their fathers! Shayk ibn Baaz opined that is compulsory upon the husband to give a sa'a on behalf of the wife even the wife has means to do so. The scholars also says it is birr-al walidayn(kindness to parent) not to stop our father to give on our behalf even if we 've the means to do it for ourselves. However if the student's consent is sought by his father or the student( knowing that this is obligatory upon him) 'INSTRUCT' or 'DELEGATE' his father or anyone to give on his behalf, then he has fufilled this obligation. Allaah knows and we do not know. 1 Like |

PEN_MIGHT: I understand your post. But I think general is talking in terms of whether it b3comes OBLIGATORY on the student to pay even though it's been paid on his behalf. I think even though he can pay, the Obligation is already lifted once someone else pays on his behalf just like the wife wouldnt have to pay as long as her husband pays. She can, still. |
