segzy14: Buildings, like all structures, are designed to support certain loads without deforming excessively. The loads are the weights of people and objects, the weight of rain and the pressure of wind--called live loads--and the dead load of the building itself. Any type of building can collapse but multi storey buildings are more prone to catastrophic collapse. All ***smiles** U kno ur onion.....was just smiling reading tru ur oda post. 1. Abuse of structures such as turning a building design to be residential building to church, school, shops etc. 2. Every structure has life expectancy, when a structure is getting to its expiration a good structure well designed and built to standard specs will not suddenly collapse but rather show distress signals, a quick intervention to fortify the building can still help elongate the life span. Quite unfortunate in 9ja we believe a structure should last forever. 3. Lack of proper and regular maintenance. 4.Poor planning, execution and management. 5. Greedy contractors shortchanging their client . 6. Naughty and ITK client who wants multi-storey building at a cost of bungalow 7. Government non nonchalant attitude 1 Like |

There are numerous factors that contribute to building collapse, highlighting the major ones : Soil test: This is the first thing that should be done before any structural design is carried out. Hardly is soil test conducted in nigeria before structures are set up. Soil test will help the engineer design a structure the soil will carry. Structural design : Here the civil engineer comes in, but the architecturer has taken our job. They draw and duplicate previous structural designs for new building without a look at the soil that will support the structure, the purpose of the structure etc. Greed: The owner of the structure may pay for a standard work but the site engineer will cut corners. This happened in one of the structures l supervised at chevron drive. l made enermies because l didn't support the use of sub standard materials and sales of materials we were to use for the job. This problem has many faces like amoeba, it can come from the owner, engineer, manufacturers, artistians etc. We just try to plug our own end. |

To curb collapse , government and the states should enforce the national building code, every professional in the building industry should charge preofessional fees and follow due process of project execution ie an should design the architectural drawing, while the other professionals do their own part. When it comes to construction, all parties involved should be on site. Govt should enforce laws that will enpower the professional bodies in arresting quacks on site. Non on the side of professional who don't go for training and retraining, their licence should be withrawn. Supervisory bodies should arrest anyone building with inadequate or substandar materials. A material like steel has different sizes and it standard but can be wrongly placed which will lead to collapse. I hv seen cases of foundations that the foundation footings ie concrete are less than 75mm. You will also see derken or slab without beams in lagos with this little observations why won't buildings collapse. Please clients always seek for a professional and pay him his fee so if anythside quality is seen on site he can be sue for misconduct. Never patronize quacks the consequencies is more than one can bear in future. Building collapse is inevitable but it can be curbed if "builders" are fully engaged. 08039458887 bldr. Dan 1 Like |
