Islamic State affiliate claims deadly attack on U.S. troops in Niger

NOUAKCHOTT (Reuters) - The leader of Islamic State’s affiliate in West Africa has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed four U.S. special forces and four soldiers from Niger in October, Mauritania’s independent Nouakchott News Agency (ANI) reported on Saturday.

The troops were killed when their joint patrol was attacked near the village of Tongo Tongo, on the Mali-Niger border, on Oct. 4 by dozens of militants armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

The incident drew attention to the little-known U.S. military presence in Niger -- it has 800 troops stationed there -- and became a major publicity headache for President Donald Trump’s administration.

Security officials had identified the perpetrators as Islamist militants loyal to Abu Adnan al-Sahrawi, the leader of Islamic State in the Greater Sahara operating along Mali’s border with Niger and Burkina Faso, but there had previously been no confirmation from al-Sahrawi himself.

“We claim the attack which targeted the American commandos in the village of Tongo Tongo,” Sahrawi, who makes public statements only very rarely, was quoted by ANI as saying.

Privately owned ANI sometimes enjoys privileged access to information on movements of Sahara-based Islamist fighters. Last year it broke news that Mali’s main jihadist groups had merged, and in 2013 it had exclusive reports about a militant attack on a gas plant in Algeria in which 38 hostages were killed.

In the statement Sahrawi also claimed a car bomb attack on French troops on Thursday near Mali’s city of Menaka, ANI reported. He said it had “killed many of them”, although the French military said in a statement that the attack had merely wounded three troops.

Lawlessness across the Sahara has enabled jihadist groups to thrive and launch increasingly deadly attacks on local and Western targets there and in the semi-arid Sahel south of it. They are seen as the biggest threat to the region’s stability. link https://af.reuters.com/article/africaTech/idAFKBN1F20KX-OZATP?utm_content=buffere9f64&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

My Mum Says Am Wicked And Heartless”; Handsome Gallant Nigerian Soldier Freeman Daniel Reveals

A handsome Nigerian soldier has revealed how his family especially his mother is displeased with him for being in the north eastern part of the country for the past three years without telling any of them.

According to Daniel, his reason for doing that is because she (the mother) would consistently worry over his safety in the region as he also revealed that he’s preparing to go back home soon.

This is what Daniel shared on his Facebook wall

"My mummy says am wicked and heartless all because for the past 3years have been in Northeast without telling any of them. But i told her that i have my reasons of doing that because she might have sleepless night but i always let her knw dat am fine and strong. Finally i will be with you soon mummy, preparing to come back home.

CAPACITY BUILDING: NAF TAKES DELIVERY OF FINAL BATCH OF SUPER MUSHSHAK AIRCRAFT

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 14 January 2018, took delivery of the second batch of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft that the Federal Government had since ordered from Pakistan. The Ilyushin 76 Strategic Airlifter aircraft that brought the new Super Mushshak aircraft touched down at NAF Base Kaduna at exactly 7.45 am today. The Chief of Logistics at NAF Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Bello Garba, received the new aircraft on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. A combined team of NAF and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) personnel were also on hand to assist in offloading the new aircraft, some parts of which came in crates. In addition, officials of the National Customs Service and the National Immigration Service were present to ensure necessary documentation. The newly delivered aircraft, which are capable of being used for acrobatics training, are all brand new and fitted with digital glass cockpit.

The newly received aircraft, five in number, form the final batch of a total of 10 Super Mushshak aircraft, the procurement of which the current Federal Government Administration initiated in Year 2016. As at 2015, local primary flying training in the NAF was almost grounded thereby necessitating the procurement of the Super Mushshak Aircraft. Consequently, with the delivery of the new Super Mushshak aircraft, primary flying training of NAF pilots at 401 Flying Training School (FTS), Kaduna has just received a boost. Without doubts, the delivery of the aircraft would go a long way in helping to sustain the process of building capacity to effectively prosecute the counterinsurgency operations in the North East as well as other forms of criminalities in the country.

It would be recalled that the NAF took delivery of the first batch of 5 brand new Super Mushshak Aircraft on 14 July 2017, following which the aircraft were inducted and deployed for primary training of NAF pilots. Furthermore, some NAF personnel had undergone training in Pakistan, as Instructor Pilots and technicians on the Super Mushshak aircraft, as part of the contract. The delivery went without any hitches and the Ilyushin 76 Aircraft has departed from Nigeria. The newly received aircraft will now be assembled in Nigeria by a team of PAF and NAF technicians prior to test flying and formal induction into the NAF.

This might end the era of Toyota Hilux

Motorised infantry is just as important as Mechanized Infantry. In places like Syria and Nigeria at the height of the insurgency. Insurgents ripped through bases with guys firing 23mm HMGs from the back of hilux trucks.

This tactic allows the insurgents to easily maneuver defence lines with ease, maximum firepower and speed. If a base comes under attack from 5 different directions with insurgents fielding 23mm's, there is a high likely hood that the small base would collapse.

You won't be able to do this with armour or deploy in considerable numbers.

Regular armies have also adopted this technique, with the Russians developing a new motorised brigade based on pick-up trucks.

Personally I don't believe the Hilux can be replaced with this, it should be replaced with the Innoson G12 military truck. The hilux, doesn't have the characteristics of a military jeep, which the G12 has. It would suffer in many areas the G12 will excel.

In my opinion, the Hilux should be replaced by the G12, while the PF2 LAV is equally purchased.

Armour can be overated. The PF2 can only provide protection against 7.62mm, it won't stop a 23mm fired from 2km away.Right there, you now have to choose between having 5 pickup trucks armed with 12.5mm HMG or a single PF2 LAV armed with a 12.7mm.

Anyway, it is about providing a good balance at the end of the day.
