Nigeria's problems are so tough that they have toppled many progressive ideas and solutions over the years. Comparing the resources of Nigeria and the wealth it can call its own to the state of the nation, it's not difficult to conclude that Nigeria is far from the road to economic and political development. Over the decades, there have been various reformative moves by Nigerians in the quest to make meaningful change in the nation, but none seem as tough as the arrival of the new merger party, the strongest national opposition party in Nigeria- All Progressive Congress (APC).
Since the inception of APC- made up of four major zonal opposition parties (ACN, ANPP, CPC and APGA), there has been clash of speculations and predictions over the party, however so far, the party seem to have been overcoming such speculations effortlessly. There's high hope on the opposition, strong hope, in that it is capable of ensuring speedy development in Nigeria. Meanwhile lets examine its foundational motive in the next paragraph.
Firstly, from messages published on the media and interview commentaries by APC faithful, the coalition party was formed with the purpose of toppling the ruling party- this in a way connotes desperacy. It's not important to topple the ruling party if little or no changes will follow. Secondly, APC is sufficiently composed of same old friends and families of PDP, who at a time became unsuccessful in their political career in PDP, thus decided to form an opposition party. With the right motive and people, no doubt, APC is capable of making sufficient change in Nigeria.
However, no matter how purposeful APC may be, it will be thoroughly difficult or perhaps impossible for the party to overcome some performing PDP representative, state and local governments; whose hard work and commitment to development have won them people's ineradical interest. In a conscious reflection on Kwara state, the objective dominance of the People's Democratic Party is apparent; the party has systematically committed itself to development evident in series of changes made in the state.
The trust built in the masses through masses oriented policies is such that a newly born party can sweep away; building trust is a process, not an event, even though the Kwara state chapter of APC has come with so much media energy, elections are not won by such effort, but by developmental success and attainable plans for the people. The successes accommodated by Kwara in a decade is mysterious, and unattainable except by efficient managers of resources- Kwara is 33rd on federal allocation list, yet it has been declared fastest growing economy and most developed state agriculturally over states that receive more resources. The challenge here is not to criticize APC, but to assess its survival in Kwara. Can APC live beyond newspaper covers in Kwara? Join me on meditation 2 next week.
