HNosegbe:

Rossikk, I hope you know that Gowon did not HIMSELF stage the coup that brought him to power? That coup was staged by Muritala Mohammed.

That said, though he wasn't a "coup plotter" in the strict sense, he was complicit in the sense that he failed to keep to the agreed schedule for handover to civilian rule by 1976.

But I agree with the substance of your post.

Look, for goodness sakes', this is Nigeria we are talking about. Gowon was a 32 year old neophyte who had not the MINUTEST appreciation of international geopolitics, economics, history, or policy. He was about as unqualified for that position as it was possible to be.

What was he doing there?

On that picture should be either Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Anthony Enahoro, Sir Ahmadu Bello. Men of substance and knowledge. Even Balewa was far more credible. What did this 32 year old soldier-man know about ANYTHING?

And people are here talking about his ''first lady'', and ''Sandhurst'' like it's Cambridge or Harvard. Sandhurst is a military school like NDA Zaria, nothing more nothing less. They don't teach you anything there other than how to be a good soldier.

Meanwhile, it was only after he was booted out of power that he decided to go and learn, at Warwick University, UK, the things he should have known PRIOR to being installed in power a decade earlier.

Now this is a First Lady!
Sweet and petite, make the husband and Nigeria look beautiful and glorious.
Like a princess, she ought to be cool, calm and soft spoken...rarely heard cos her smile and beauty speaks a thousand words.
God bless you Madam Gowon.

Guy you just spewed trash.
How old was Alexandria the great when he conquered Nations down to India.
Seem all you pointed out was about the age.
All the old men that have been ruling since-what did they achieve?
And the thread was about the elegance of Gowon's wife, not about Gowon's performance as president.
Don't be an educated mumu.

Rossikk: Spare us this garbage. All I see is a 32 year old kid and his spouse who have no business being at the helm of a nation, but got there via the barrel of a gun. Nothing to celebrate.
Today that you are a full grown man with same set of ladies
What are you doing about it?

That you even thought of mentioning such an ancient personage from the pre-industrial era shows your pre-industrial level of thinking. Perhaps in the days of Alexander, a soldier adept at ''conquering nations'' would have been appropriate, for which Gowon may have fitted. But this was the 20th century, when qualities required for national leadership involved far more brain than brawn.

Seem all you pointed out was about the age.

His age is shocking. I can't imagine a 32 year old ruling Nigeria today. What were we thinking?

All the old men that have been ruling since-what did they achieve?

Awo achieved a lot, as did Ahmadu Bello, Michael Okpala etc. The impact of their progressive rule and activism is felt even till today in their respective regions. These were credible leaders. Go and read your Nigerian history.

Don't be an educated mumu.

Firstly, this is the Politics Section in case you forgot, and thus, all threads are subject to political scrutiny, including those discussing ''elegance''.

Secondly, you are the educated mumu who would rather discuss the ''elegance of Gowon's wife'', than debate the impact of the ten year dictatorship of the nation by an unqualified, unelected gun toting soldier.

Your education is wasted on frivolities.

Courtesy chukwuma Nzeugwu , emmanuel ifeajuna and other biafran brothers who started it all. We are still reaping the harvest of their evil deeds.

mens dept: So what does this picture show except for a man who joined to defeat what could have been a more promising group of countries controlled by Africans and not Queen Eliza.
He mismanaged the country's resources and stayed there for almost a decade before being booted out, and running back to his masters in London.
Nonsense

Shame on you !
Gowon did not mismanage the country.

Rossikk: You have no common sense. Anyone can 'achieve' seizing power illegally if he had a gun and enough lawless backers. That you call a 32 year old soldier seizing political power in a coup an 'achievement' shows your low IQ.

And Ojukwu failed and died a failure.

MAYOWAAK: The classy, graceful-elegant and a consummate fashionista, Mrs Victoria Gowon is seen here posing for photograph with her husband and Nigeria's (then) Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, and Queen Elizabeth and her own husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Unlike, Maryam, Maryam, Turai, Stella and The Dame, after her Madam Victoria never bothered to meddle in the affairs of the state. May be Mrs Gowon has the presence of mind that the office was just ceremonial or she was just naïve, but since her time, we have had women who are self obsessed, power drunk, and meddlesome in the affairs of the state. Worst, some have shown us that they are more powerful than the husbands, and that their fingers are even more itchy-twitchy than the men's. The current one is giving that ceremonial office a new and advanced meaning of low.

Our women have arrived, they no longer want to be behind the successful husband or beside him. And that must be celebrated, for there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, it must be seen as a plus.I've seen very bright and intelligent women, and how they dust their male classmates, and leave them wondering what happened. That is why I believe that office should be scrapped. Women should aspire to be Margaret Ekpu, Anikulapo Kuti, Gambo Sawaba, Ladi Shehu, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Oby Ezekwesili, Alele-Williams, Serah Jibrin, Rukayya, etc. I don't want them to get ahead just by virtue of a marriage certificate. I want it to be because their academic certificate, integrity, track record, experience, their intellect, power of expression, power of persuasion and integrity. They should apply for office or bid for it. It is not easy, never going to be, but nothing is ever easy. Meritocracy is the best shot for serious and qualified women to contribute meaningfully to nation-development.

We need our First Ladies to be ceremonial just like Flora Azikwe, Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, Victoria Gowon and Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, or have no First Lady at all. At least, from 1960 - 1963 there was none. Same as 1979 - 1983 (Shagari did not allow any of his wives to do the "job"wink, 1983 - 1985 (even as educated as Safinatu Buhari, the General said, "I married my wife for myself, not for Nigerians) and 2005 - 2007 (office vacant as a result of Stella OBJ's death). One thing that unconstitutional office does to our polity is that, political prostitutes (I don't mean female prostitutes in the true sense of the term) flock around the sitting First Lady, just so that they can easily reach the ears of President or the Governor.
OP DON'T WORRY, WHEN YOU BECOME NIGERIA'S PRESIDENT IF DESTINY PERMITS, LOCK UP YOUR WIFE IN THE BEDROOM, OR IN THE KITCHEN, SHE WILL SMILE AT YOU AND GIVE YOU THE HOTTEST KISSES. YOU DON'T KNOW THE WORLD IS DYNAMIC, UPDATES EVERYDAY LIKE ANTIVRUS SOFTWARE.

hey mr,
that u are over 32 and still living in ur father's house does not mean 32 yr olds cannot take the world by storm,
how old do u think the likes of Awo and Zik were when they entered politics.
if u have a problem with Gowon, point it out, his age has nothing to do with his becoming president and u biafrans should be thankful that it wasnt some ruthless soldier like murtala that was at the helm of affairs during the war. i bet u, the war wouldnt have even lasted a month. gowon prosecuted that war with so much humanity, u all shld be grateful to him
