Few Nigeria banks are currently ranked among the world’s top 400, according to The Banker magazine of the Financial Times Group, London.

The President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Mr. Segun Aina, is of the opinion that Nigerian banks can do better and that they have what it takes to be ranked among the top 100 in the world.

According to latest reports published by the Banker magazine on July 1, 2013, only two Nigerian banks made the list of top 400 banks in the world, while eleven other Nigerian banks made it to the top 1000.

Others are Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, United Bank for Africa, Ecobank, Fidelity Bank, First City Monument Bank, Skye Bank, Diamond Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Union Bank and Standard Chartered Bank.

Guaranty Trust Bank moved to 417 from 455, Access Bank moved to 506 from 541 and UBA moved to 553 from 563.

“The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria is at the forefront to assist banks design best practices and services, supported with the best corporate governance and integrity, as this is one of our primary motives,” Aina said.

The CIBN president urged banks to cooperate with the Central Bank of Nigeria to reach the unbanked population through financial inclusion...
