Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State were, yet again, at daggers drawn in Ekiti State at the weekend as they engaged themselves in a free for all at the burial of the mother of a chieftain of the party at Iyin-Ekiti.

The feuding loyalists of the party turned the venue of a burial reception for Chief (Mrs) Felicia Akinwumi, the mother of a chieftain of the APC, Mr Dipo Akinwumi, to a war zone.

The clash pitted supporters of Governor Kayode Fayemi and the member representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele, against themselves, with the incident almost disrupting the funeral programme.

Witnesses told newsmen that trouble started at about 4.30p.m., with some of them alleging that it occurred after the arrival of a leader of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), a Yoruba militant group, in the state, Mr. Niyi Adedipe, alias Apase.

Adedipe was alleged to have arrived the venue of the ceremony with thugs, with a witness saying “we knew it was going to result in violence as I noticed, as soon as Apase and these people arrived, that their mission was to cause trouble.”

The witness, who pleaded to remain anonymous, also alleged that “Apase and his men on arrival immediately went to where Bamidele’s supporters were seated and caused confusion leading to reprisal attack from the other side.”

He said following this, stones, bottles and other missiles began to fly around the venue, leading to commotion at the party attended by some chieftains of the party, including the caretaker chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, Major Tajudeen Awe (rtd).

A number of people were said to have been injured in the clash, with a man, said to have been cut with machete, currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, while vehicles were also damaged.

The clash also led to vandalism of the party’s office in the council area, as well as the campaign office of Mr. Bamidele.

Meanwhile, APC leaders on both sides are pointing fingers at one other, with the Director-General of Bamidele’s campaign organisation, Mr. Ropo Ige, accusing Adedipe and Special Assistant to Governor Fayemi on Internal Security, Mr. Deji Adesokan, a.k.a Jarule, of allegedly leading thugs to the event with the sole aim of attacking Bamidele.

Ige, who conducted newsmen round their vandalised secretariat, also alleged that the attackers went away with some of their flags, adding “they (the thugs) came because Opeyemi Bamidele was around and their aim was to cause confusion in order to create the impression that we are trouble makers. Somebody broke a bottle and splashed the content on the people sitting close to Bamidele in order to provoke him, but he kept calm.”

He expressed disappointment that supporters of the lawmaker were allegedly not being given security, adding that “it is not a crime for the lawmaker to have indicated his interest in the governorship position.”

He said the incident had been reported to the police, and urged the security agencies to investigate the crisis with a view to ascertaining those behind it, saying “this is not the first time the lawmaker would be attacked since he indicated his interest in the governorship position.”

However, Adesokan (Jarule) denied being a party to the crisis.

Protem chairman of the APC in the state, Chief Jide Awe, said Adedipe was at the ceremony on his invitation.

Awe, who also took newsmen to the Ward A secretariat of the APC at Iyin-Ekiti, also alleged that the party flags were pulled off by Bamidele’s supporters, alleging that Ayodeji Olofin was matcheted on the head by the lawmaker’s supporters.
