Sometime ago I created a topic outlining the Truths and Myths of Islam.

Now, it's time to talk about Atheism. In this thread I'm gonna reveal things you don't about atheism or take for granted.

1) Myth
Atheists believe that life is meaningless.

Truth
On the contrary, religious people often worry that life is meaningless and imagine that it can only be redeemed by the promise of eternal happiness beyond the grave.

Atheists tend to be quite sure that life is precious. Life is imbued with meaning by being really and fully lived. Our relationships with those we love are meaningful now; they need not last forever to be made so. Atheists tend to find this fear of meaninglessness …well…meaningless.

often like to point out that religious belief

While this neither proves nor disproves the existence of God; it certainly seems to make a belief in God undesirable.

Unfortunately for atheists, they have some of their own history to deal with. In the early and mid 20 century, atheism, thanks to communism, was at its zenith historically.

More than any time in history, a number of governments were overtly atheistic – there was no religious belief to motivate their leaders and armies. And it was during that time and in those places that the most horrible actions were taken – perhaps the worst in the history of man.

The governments of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, the various leaders of North Korea and Vietnam, as well as various regimes in Eastern Europe, Africa and South America killed tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of people all told. They imprisoned millions more merely for their religious or political beliefs.

The worst forms of torture and forced labor occurred under these systems, and many places have never fully recovered from the ravages of those times. If one were to evaluate beliefs based on
the degree of pain and violence those
beliefs provoked, then atheism would certainly be the standard for motivating
horrible behavior.

The most brutal regimes have been atheistic.

3) Myth
Atheistic Population is no more a minority

You will always be a small minority. The reality is as long as there have been recognizable human communities, there have been religious beliefs.

Ideas about God or gods were the foundation of musicality, art, literature, even civilization itself. Our capacity for spiritual comprehension is our most distinguishing factor – perhaps more than any other thing. That is what it means to be human.

Even today, religious belief persists and is growing in the world – and this is made even more the case as primarily secular
societies fade due to lack of procreation. If
several thousand years of human history
and all current trends are any indication,
atheism is in its twilight years not its infancy.

4) Myth
Atheism is all about being allergic to B.S

You can never be certain that what you believe to be true is true.

There is no basis in atheism for any
confidence in one’s ability to discern what
is and isn’t true about reality. The reason
for this is because if one’s main instrument
for deriving beliefs about reality (one’s
physical brain) is the product of undirected incidental forces then there is no guarantee that this instrument is accurate in that respect.

In fact, there is much reason to believe our cognitive equipment is faulty. So atheism contains its own internal defeater; if atheism is true, there is no reason for an atheist to be confident that atheism is true.

Steven Weinberg - "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Some mentally imbalanced people use god or religion as a purpose to carry out horrendous acts. If a radical Muslim detonates a suicide bomb, that person is seen by many to be a martyr. If radical Christian kills a doctor for performing abortions, that person is seen by many to be a hero. Without religion, these acts may or may not have been carried out, but the people doing them would be classified as evil by all.

Lesser forms of evil are carried out by otherwise decent people in the name of religion such as misogyny, homophobia, fear mongering, etc. The penalty for apostasy under Sharia Law - even today - is death. This penalty is increasingly unlikely to be carried out since it has been brought to the attention of the rest of the world, but it is still a part of the Law.

Try to think of a good act performed by a person in the name of God or religion that would not have been performed by a non-believer.

Maybe when you compare this, you will come to realise that that statement isn't myth but fact

Religion is not culture......culture covers art, music, literature and civilization. Spirituality is completely different from Religion.......religion is only forcing itself and trying to steal spirituality.

African tradition and society is is more secular and atheistic.

In yoruba belief.....ELEDUMARE is not Yahweh but totality of everything in the universe....this is the reason yoruba people worship even their part of body like toes, some pray with breast and private parts. Ori eni (your consciousness) is your God. If you share the same belief with me, you worship with me and if you dont, you dine with me.

Atheism has a moral compass

Truth
There is no objective way to evaluate
moral choices. This is another truth that invites atheists to imagine something that can’t actually exist.

In a purposeless universe, there is no basis for contending that creatures who incidentally evolved there should behave in a particular manner; there is no anchor to which we can tether an idea of right or wrong moral choices.

From an atheist perspective moral claims are wholly derived from our own mental faculties – and as we saw in the previous point that would make them fairly arbitrary.

This is especially true considering there are
competing claims about right and wrong
behavior. So then while an atheist might
desire to act a certain way or desire that others acted in a certain way, he or she
can never say others should act in a certain way as no human behavior is actually ever ‘wrong’ in any objective sense.

Atheists often argue that they are as
moral as any religious believer – but such
a claim requires morals to exist in the first place!

Im not very sure you post with your thinking cap on. Were you born a christian or a muslim? If anybody convert to any religion, he/she does that because his/her awareness and conviction to the religion. You are a christian because your parents are either a christian or you are born in a christian household/community or you came across christianity at a point in time. You are not zoroaster because you dont know about it or might have not heard about it. You are not Jain because you have not heard or came in contact with people who practise jainism. If you were born in saudi, you will probably be muslim before you convert to another religion. People were not born with religion. You such a pathetic liar.

I am an Atheist.... I support some of christ teaching like love, charity and respect for authorities. I support Islam doctrines that involve giving charity. I love buddhism for their philosophical concepts. I have posted here praising Mother Theresa, Martin Luther, Malcox and even the Nigerian pastor Tunde Bakare. I have posted here praising Malala for his female education struggle. Who said only atheist support human right and equality?

I am a great fan of African spirituality. I study and admire teachings of Ifa. Ifa does not discriminate women. Women are priest and carry lots in Ifa tradition. Jainism is the best religion I give the crown of non-violent, not torturing even animals, insects and living organism. The religion gives room for human right and equalitys. Jainism is atheist religion and I give it to them the crown of tolerance.

China, russia and communist countries are practising state religion. They have faith, holy books and saviours. Educate yourself

4) Homosexualism(Yes, I said it) will become the new vogue.

etc...

These are simply tip of an iceberg as to why the world need religion. Religion restores order, give one a morality compass and so on.

Religion of course like all things under the Sun is not perfect. Bad elements are bound to erupt now and again, but the gains are far more greater than the setbacks.

Culture didn't just sprung form nowhere, dude. It has it's origin in Religion. Before the advent of Christianity and Islam, many civilization were actively engaged in heathern gods worship, which is so intricately inter-woven into their various cultures, that an outsider wouldn't even begin to comprehend which one is which.

Works of arts, started as such as artists strive to put their imagination into physical interpretation. Masterpieces like the pyramids of Egypt, Statue of Hecules, Pyramids of the Mayans, etc, sprung up all their majestic splendor. All this great work of arts were all done in honor of one god of another.

Literature and Music also had a similar and parallel nature.
Culture, civilization, arts, music owes a lot to religion, and telling yourself otherwise is only making you look desperate and ignorant.
