It is no hidden knowledge that nowadays the common Nigerian youth has no faith or hope in his country. A large number of young men and ladies alike search for ways to leave the country, sometimes taking huge risks and endangering their lives in the process. They say the situation in the country is too harsh and they believe that the grass is greener in Europe or Asia or America or anywhere in the universe apart from Nigeria or sometimes, Africa.
A number of these emigrants have found out the hard way that the supposed ‘greener pastures’ abroad are made green by considerate efforts of wetting and that they must be very hardworking in order to make their own grasses green. Some discovered that the supposed green grasses are actually hay and have no semblance to what they had imagined. They therefore resort to other types of greens which contradict the country’s laws and regulations. But why trot across the globe only to discover that beggars would ride if wishes were horses?
There’s this local saying that “What you go searching for all the way to Sokoto is actually in your sokoto (pocket)”. It is also widely believed that you choose what you want to see, that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The same thing applies to Nigeria and Nigerians.
Most Nigerian university graduates dream of jobs that will fetch them huge income after graduation and all the skill they need is to know how to chat on BBM and Facebook during office hours. The belief that God will solve all of their problems makes them blind to the efficiency of hard work and diligence. I’m not saying that prayer doesn’t work but hard work is needed too. I’m sure if Nigerians work more than they pray, the situation won’t be as worse as it currently is.
Like the Good Book said, “Seeth thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men”. This statement is true anywhere one goes, Nigeria or Europe, unless you’re born with blue blood in your veins.
If you look around, you’ll see people considering Nigeria as a land of green pastures, and creating irrigation channels. The key is to focus on diligence and positivity. There’s so much negativity flying around these days and it’s necessary to discard them in order to be successful. Success stories have a way of creating a sense and a desire for success.
Nigerian youths must incorporate diligence and hard work into their being and stop relying on God to solve all their woes. God has actually solved your problems by giving you a brain. Use it.
