Says who? You seem to forget that Russian foreign policy is largely determined by who is in power at that given time, under medvedev, I agree Russia wouldn't want to stick their heads out to far, probably the way they did Libya, but under Putin? I don't think so.

1 - Russia has already stuck its head out too far already, it would be a total wasted effort to turn back now.

2 - Russia ( especially Putin ) feels betrayed about what happened in Libya, he's going to put his foot down on this one.

3 - Syria is strategic to russia, in the sense that Syria holds the only Russian military base in the Middle East.

As for china, I might agree because for them, economic interest always remain paramount in their decision making.

And FYI russia has moved their battle ships to the Mediterranean already, just monitoring the situation

GraphicsPlus: I am aware that if US strikes Syria when Britain, China and Russia have said no, there will be grave consequences. Obama is aware of that. This is why he's waiting and delaying to order for a strike. Obama is handicapped because US greatest ally, Britain has backed out of the plan to strike Syria.

However, I do not agree for a second that Assad is not responsible of the chemical weapon that was used against innocent and helpless civilians. The rebels couldn't have gotten a sophisticated weapon like that. From where? We are not talking about grenade bombs here. We are talking about Chemical weapons, which Russia and Iran, the two greatest allies of Syria possess.

US is not a war-monger country. If after thorough investigation and ongoing scanning, and it is discovered that Assad indeed used chemical weapon against his own people, I believe it is wise for Obama to order for a strike. Syria should be punished for crossing the red line. It is against international law to use chemical weapon during war how much more a civil war.

But again, I know Obama is facing several choices. The fact that the rebels have link with Al-Qaeda is one reason Obama will not make the choice of supplying weapons to them. Again, Americans will not agree for US soldiers to be on ground in Syria because of resources and men they have lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Obama strikes, Russia and Iran may be provoked. Iran is Syria's strongest ally because of the role Syria played during their war against Iraq.

So, I know that whatever choice Obama makes, the consequence will be grave. However, I believe if it is proven that Assad indeed used chemical weapons against his people, Syria should be punished. I think this is why Obama is delaying any military action. He wants to get more coalition and clearer evidence.

No, i don't argue that the US is invincible, my argument is that going by the logic of MAD, Russian warships in the Mediterranean region will only stand by and watch should the US decide to strike at Syria.

Russia has had its nuclear stockpile for decades. American war planners know this. - This is not a new development and it's not really something that American policymakers are worried about. American policymakers know that regardless of how much success they record with the START treaty, Russia WILL ALWAYS have a nuclear strike capability.

Russia on the other hand is having to cope with recent developments in America's missile defense capabilities. Russian policymakers are extremely worried about this. If NATO extends further to the East and America develops its missile shield further, Russian nuclear deterrent may actually be threatened.

Having a larger pile of nuclear weapons make no difference - Israel is estimated to have approximately 200 nuclear war heads, - an amount considerably smaller than what either the Russians or the Americans have. However, all 200, -some of which have capabilities that can inflict 50 times as much damage than what was witnessed at Hiroshima - can probably take down the whole of USA or Russia!


I don't see how much more Russia could go in terms of arm sales to Syria. It's already supplied it with several of its advanced weaponry - anything more would be damaging to Russia's own interest, since Russia cannot predict the future of Syria, why supply it with weapons that may one day fall into the hands of Russia's adversaries?
