Why Isn't There A Decent 3D Game Of Any Kind From Nigerian Programmers? by CODEEATER(m): 8:25pm On Sep 01, 2013 |
Can some one tell me WHY no Nigerian developer or programmer has made any decent 3D game of any kind?... Even if na 3D whot...I mean its bad enough that there is ALMOST no game for smart phones and PCs, its even worse to think that non is a 3d work...what is the matter?.. Is it that its "too difficult"? Or we just see it as Oyibo man work, n not our business? |

I know many programmers who can do this including me but the main problem behind this is the 3d models we are programmers not artist that's why nigerian artist have to wise up and start learning 3d modeling |

^ That is a very lame excuse sir, i can bet they are more 3D modellers than Programmers in Nigeria, Goto Nairaland Graphics Section, they are a whole lot of them |

Javanian: ^ You are wrong Javanian. Most of those guys there arent actually doing anything. Most of them cant model to save a life. I am not talking about mugs and kitchens. And the number of programmers in Nigeria is actually much more than 3D modellers. Some of them shamlessly steal readymade models from the internet and render them just for bragging rights. Sad, isnt it? Furthermore, it takes more than 3D modeling and programming to make a good game. U also have to know animation, physics, level design, game design, story-telling, etc.....Even very good mathematics. Personally, I think the only thing hindering game development in Nigeria is lack of skilled teams. Most Nigerians are used to working alone. We arent able to organise ourselves into formidable teams. That can be attributed to lack of funds though. Dont start preaching to me about greatness and sacrificing today for 2moro. A lot of guys think that is enough to motivate people. And they start telling u the story of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. It isnt enough. Even if u start, u might get burned out easily. I have shown a lot of people my models and they have asked me to join their crew. And when I ask them of their aims, knowledge and their plans, all I see from their response is that they are just a bunch of fanboys dreaming. They have no inkling about what such a project entails. I just stay smart and decline. And I have never regretted it till this day. In Enugu, in Asaba, in Ibadan, in Lagos, in Benin, in Akure. The story is mostly the same. Till this day, they are yet to reach any milestone. To really do something relevant, one needs to be skilled at it, spend time on it and have a way of paying his bills and while in the process. Any thing besides that is most likely a pipe dream. 5 Likes |

Wait guys, you have not seen a 3D game by Nigerians? Google "govern subsidy 3d game". Its made by Nigerians oh. A white reporter for associated press wrote about the Game, he even twitted it. About mobile games, also google "Ecomogwars-Bakassi", its a Nigerian made mobile war game. Its on my phone currently, cool. Nigerians are trying we just don't hear of them. |

PhenomenonVFX: what you are saying is tantamount to saying that most programmers in Nigeria work with CMSs, shamelessly stealing peoples content on the internet and editing them for bragging rights when we both know its not true. There would always be quacks in any field but that doesn't mean there aren't any good 3D modellers out there.
Very well said Can i see some of your 3D models? and what would it cost me to get your services? 1 Like |

I said most not all of them are quacks. Anyway u can find some of my works on this page https://www.nairaland.com/949015/setting-standards-3d-animation-nigeria/1 Also, my services are not available for now. I have taken a break from cg art for now. Would continue before the end of the year though. |

1. Algebra: most especially matrices. U want to know matrix rotations, cross-product etc..... Some numerical analysis might also be handy in some situation. 2. Calculus. The better u are at it, the better u are at life. . With this and the (1) u can write some very good custom behavious for ur characters and props. Game engines may help u a bit. But..... 3. Probability and Statistics. The more sophisticated the game, the more u need it. Especially when it comes to giving intelligence to some of ur characters. 4. Physics is good for reality sake. To simulate some physical stuff, u may have to get dirty and take control from the game engine itself. U may also have to specify custom behaviours. For example, the way one metal crumbles is different from the way another does so. U need fine control. And ur knowledge of physics will come in handy in knowing the right settings to choose even when using the game engine interface. Be advised that the above isnt exactly etched in stone. U can do ok with little of some of them and ur intuition will always be one of ur best tools. But to publish an average respectable game out there u might need to set ur bar higher. Those Asians and White guys have set the pace, u have to be at par with some of them for ur stuff to count and for people to be eager to play ur game and pay u for it. 1 Like |

Algebra...m fairly OK wit. Probability n stats...on a scale of 1-10, I give myself a 7. Calculus.....DAT 1 makes my lips dry , don't knw it at all, not in sciences. |

PhenomenonVFX: Very true. Especially our inability to form teams and lack of skills to enable us work smarter. |
Re: Why Isn't There A Decent 3D Game Of Any Kind From Nigerian Programmers? by gameaddict(m): 3:52pm On Sep 11, 2013 |
@meshybizzo: You're right. We did try here: https://www.nairaland.com/471237/game-development-join-team/20 Interest waned as time passed without significant updates/progress which was due to the fact that most of us were noobs at the time. To make matters worse, my hard drive went toast and I had to start all over (slow internet = not a lot of online backups). Plus a game isn't just about placing and animating 3d models on the screen and shooting/performing other actions unless you are considering the more popular endless progression form of most of today's mobile apps. Anyways, for those of us who put in the effort, I believe the experience was worth it. For me, it was. I've been experimenting with gameplay and stuff lately, focusing more on 2d, endless progressions and mobile however. And school doesn't give me time to do a lot especially since my interests no longer lie in the game development aspect of programming alone.

PhenomenonVFX: you so hit the nail on its head. I have been writing games lately, am actually working on one simple space shooter game in AS3. I must confess, There is more to it than web development/database/Logics and all the API works. You have to be able to tell a story, create difficult levels and these levels must at same time allow for extreme gamers to reach the highest scores. Must be immersive and addictive. Most developers i have around me just cant wrap their heads around the task. see mouth. when you talk, they will start "HTML5 is the future", "Android does not support this" they know whats in the news, yet the html5 sef, dem no sabi. the result is that you are forced to do you own stunts. It is tough and requires understanding of "Real physics" motion, you have to dedicate time to pickup books on physics, Mathematics, go back to those old physics formulae. Nigeria has a long way to go trust me. the power situation is also dragging the industry backward. and all most of our leaders think of is how to securely hide cash and secure their own future. |

Goodness, wth is Quaternions That's a first for me Anyway the two 2d games i cloned(created) didnt require these |

In 2D, you don't need most of these stuff, most of them are particular to 3D |
Re: Why Isn't There A Decent 3D Game Of Any Kind From Nigerian Programmers? by Nmeri17: 6:30am On Sep 20, 2013 |
So when next my friends complain we never get to use stuff like algebra, matrices and all those annoying physics stuff in real life, i should just tell em programmers use it a great deal |

webdezzi: LMAO. I feel ur pain bro. I really do. We still have a long way to go in Nigeria. Not just by being satisfied with impressing noobs and being local champions. There's much to do still. |

I stumbled on this thread while shamelessly looking for where to market my 3D game app for mtn competition (http://nexva.com/31769) . Now back to the topic, I feel the major issue with 3d game development isn't about nepa, poor internet and hunger(although they do matter significantly!!). It's the fact that it's not marketable in this country, coupled with the fact that it is convoluted and frustrating. The thing about Nigeria is that the population is so high that even if a small percentage are geniuses, that will still be a high amount. Now tell these guys, there's money in game dev and you'll see wonders in 3 months. |
