@Berem,

I think you are being rather preemptive here.
The report merely signals a possible change of direction rather than any firm decision on Babangida's part.

Anyway, here is what sources adjacent to other sources which are close to even closer sources now tell us. grin

Jonathan reaches out to IBB through Anenih, Adenuga

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2013

By Daniel Kanu (Lagos) and Chesa Chesa, Rotimi Akinwumi (Abuja)

•Guber ambition of IBB’s son used as bait

•Ex-military President, Ahmadu Ali visit Aso Rock

•President stops Tukur’s plan to set up anti-Kwankwaso panel in Kano

President Goodluck Jonathan is pushing on with his perceived second term bid by reaching out to former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, for support to break the ranks of northern elite who are opposed to his ambition.

Daily Independent has gathered exclusively from highly reliable sources that the President enlisted the support of Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Tony Anenih, and Chairman of telecoms firm, Globacom, Mike Adenuga Jr, in the project.

The latest efforts are coming on the heels of the seemingly intractable crisis in the PDP which has climaxed in the emergence of a breakaway group led by Abubakar Kawu Baraje and other top notchers of the party, including ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The aggrieved party leaders, who also have seven state Governors elected on the platform of the PDP among them, had penultimate week walked out from the special mini-convention of the party to form a splinter group otherwise known as ‘New PDP.’

The group’s National Chairman is Abubakar Kawu Baraje.

Babangida is himself a chieftain of the PDP and a one-time Presidential aspirant.

The schism in the party has since degenerated into a full-blown battle for the soul of the PDP.

The splinter group has just elected members of its own National Working Committee (NWC) and set up its secretariat.

As both factions dig deeper into the trenches, Jonathan upped the ante by reaching out to Babangida to swing the odds in his favour.

Babangida is a core member of ‘power must return to the North project’ and has been vocal in recent times on both the efficacy of two-party system and the need for the ruling party to pick the right candidate for the 2015 Presidential election.

Besides, Babangida’s recent advice to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to “go for higher office” was seen as an explicit rebuff of Jonathan’s second term bid.

Jonathan’s move, Daily Independent gathered, was initiated over the weekend after the reconciliation efforts by former President Olusegun Obasanjo apparently failed.

While Anenih was assigned to reach out to Halilu Akilu, a retired Brigadier-General and Babangida’s former security chief, Adenuga, a known business associate of the former military President, was to also reach out to him.

The North is insisting that the minimum condition for truce is the President dropping his second term ambition.

The northern elite are claiming that serving for only one term was the agreement reached with Jonathan before the 2011 Presidential election.

But Presidency sources insisted on Monday that Jonathan was not prepared to sacrifice his constitutional right to vote and be voted for in elections on the altar of “nebulous agreements.”

It could not be ascertained at press time last night if Anenih had called Akilu and what the response was.

A Presidency source, who spoke to Daily Independent anonymously on Tuesday, said Jonathan considers Babangida more liberal than other northern leaders that have become very hawkish.

Besides, Jonathan is said to be using the governorship ambition of Babangida’s son, Mohammed, as a bait to lure him into the project.

“How that will work out remains to be seen. But the thinking in the Presidency is that support for Mohammed’s ambition could be used to persuade Babangida to support President Jonathan’s ambition.

“The only snag there is that opposition to the President’s ambition has become a Northern project and it remains to be seen how Babangida will agree to abandon the North.

Unfortunately low-thinking gullible Nigerians have been hood-winked (as if their blissful ignorance has not made it all the more easier) into creating value from dog-sh.it. The ranks of ACF, APC, PDP and crooked leaders who have brought us to this damnable position we find ourselves today all sit and talk as if they are the bastions of Democracy and without them Peace will not reign. these criminals continue to use low-thinking strategies because we are all low-thinking animals who cannot recognize them for who they truly are.. Wicked Criminals.. today Dokubo opens his putrid mouth to talk and we give him audience, Tinubu opens his farty-smelly mouth to talk we give him audience, GEJ opens his clueless gaff and we nod in agreement as if these basta.ards are making any sense. We go back to the drawing board to make our life changing decisions on the basis of low-thinking criminals and tomorrow we hold our arms back in shock when things are not working. The whole pot of soup called Nigerian Leaders are all rotten fowl-smelling road-kill and this is what will be served at the table of democracy. this is what we have been eating for the past 50 years.. Nigerians when shall we rise up and do the needful.

This is one of the major highlights of the report of the Political Committee, one of the secret committees raised by the President.

It was learnt that the report of the political committee was ready last night.

The President raised three committees last Thursday before travelling to Kenya on a state visit.

The committees (Political, Legal and Contact) were given advisory task on how the presidency should contain the aggression of the G-7 governors and the Kawu Baraje faction.

A source said: “The other measures recommended by the committee include an X-ray of the activities of the disloyal members in the states and possible expulsion of some of those indicted in the factionalisation of PDP.

Who cares if IBB wants to wants to pull out.Who pulled him in in the first place? Were they not the once that caused the artificial crisis. My take is,team GEJ should dig in their heels and call the bluff of the power-hungry traitors,if they feel more comfortable working with APC in 2015 to scuttle the ambition of GEJ to run for the 2015 election, then so be it.

Arrant nonsense
