Dear Siena,

I recently acquired a VW Jetta 2006 model that developed transmission issues. I will attempt to list these issues:

1 . All gears are selected in the instrument panel (I guess that means it is in limp mode. Why it is in limp mode is what I don't understand)

2. Other signs: vehicle occasionally jerks quite violently when the reverse gear especially is selected from 'P' position. The ride is also jerky also occasionally. Most times, the car will change gears seamlessly but with deceleration to a complete stop, accelerating is unusually prolonged. Seems the engine power for some reason isn't been transmitted to the wheels. There is also the occasional high engine revs (loss of gear).

This all began on a trip to Abuja. I had the car taken to mandilas where the car was scanned and a change of gear oil and gear oil filter was recommended but the solution seemed too simple for the complicated problem. The error was cleared (and while driving, only 'D' was selected but about 30 minutes later, all gears were selected while in traffic and problem has persisted.

Currently in Lagos and had the car taken to VW dealership and they recommended changing the transmission and the cost of a new gearbox is about the cost of a new Kia Rio. So there lies my dilemma.

Recently however, there is a rattling noise, not very loud that is audible when the gear is changed to 'D'. That occurred the morning the car was being driven to the dealership.

In any case, what do you advise?

1. Get a mechanic to fix the gear box?
2. Buy a tokunbo gear box

Would love to hear from you. Would also appreciate the contact of a transmission specialist in Lagos from members of the house.

take it to people who do proper diagnostics, why did they clear the code and not tell you the code number ? the code has all answers to your problem

Can you please give me the address of any place in Lagos where I can get the transmission diagnosed and get an exact code? In the meantime, some transmission mechanic says getting replacement parts for that model is a little difficult and buying a fairly used gearbox is easier....

Have the transmission scanned and post error codes here,it will go a long way to fixing your car and personally I don't think your gearbox is bad.

UPDATE:

I decided to purchase a VAG cable and run the scan myself after reading the manual. After scanning the transmission, I had the following error codes:

17118 - Gear 4
P0734 - 003 -Incorrect Ratio - Intermittent

01192 - Torque Converter Lock-up Clutch

I have attached a file with a summary of the Auto Scan I did myself this evening. I look forward to getting any assistance with any of the codes.

@FSB, sorry about. Your dilemma. I had same issues with my '05 jetta and I have been able to resolve it. The signs were just same as you described yours,I changed transmission oil and the issue resolved for a while though longer than you said yours did.though it took a while before I felt the difference but afterwards I enjoyed it for some weeks before it went back to the jerking.
Long story short,I was faced with same options as you,but in my case , N97 code came up along with some other codes.which is the valve body stuff.I'm surprised yours is not having that.don't clear any codes when you scan, that will give you a clearer picture. Well ,my mechanic advised that I shouldn't buy a used valve body and that I could buy a used gear box.but on bringing the issue to NL,@ siena advised that I shouldn't consider a used gear box but rather change the valve body which I ended up doing and he was able to help procure and ship to me.my car drives smoothly now and I'm finally over the problem.you should post your query on his thread VW/AuDi resolution thread to get his attention. All the best

Please i need help!!!! Especially at Siena. I am so desperate. I have a VW Jetta 2006 TDI (diesel). Since i got it, its been one issue after another. Now the gear is refusing to shift. The [P R N D S] on the dashboard keeps flashing and it wont shift. If i turn off the car and put it back on, it drives ok. I noticed its A DSG as well. Please does anyone know a mechanic that deals with VW. Going to VW would cost me an arm and leg. Do not have that kind of money. Advice please. Has anyone experienced such issues.

Thank You

@ op do you stay in luth idiaraba? The honest truth about your car problem started from using the wrong transmission fluid. I can tell you the VW gesrbox are very fragile and done like the slightest of all abuse. Imagine running your transmission on that so-called "ABRO oil" 600 naira for 1 litre. Car owners rush at it cos it cheaper not knowing it does more harm than good. The VAG have got its rexommended transmission oil called VAG dsg fluid. You don't wanna compromise

With those codes you posted. Its a chance of 50 50 that you might have your gear box back to life. If you are in naija complete replacement is the way forward

Agreed but that same ride you sold can as well put you in a more serious mess. Once you resolve this issue, you definitely will enjoy the ride.

Hello @Siena

I have a similar issue recently with my Volkswagen Jetta 2009.

I was on a trip and it suddenly began to rev without switching gears. I ended up changing transmission fluid and running a scan. The scan results reads:

P0721, P0731, P0751 at different scans, along side output shaft speed sensor circuit range/performance. After clearing the codes, the problem persists.

Now the mechanic advised a change of gear box.

Please, help me out, as buying a gear box is way out of my budget for now.
