As far as infrastructure is concerned, private schools are better but their students are not necessarily better. Most of them don't usually have the depth that public schools have and the exorbitant money they pay as tuition is just meant to pave way for a faster and more convenient learning curve. This means that they won't have problem of strikes like you have in public school. Public school students that are serious tend to be more grounded than private school students for whatever reason.

I am indifferent when it comes to comparison of this nature: There are cathegories of both private and public schools. There are some 'private' schools that public schools are far better than. For example, the mushroom private schools springing up are not in any way up to the standard of federal government colleges. The only set of schools that can stand them are some of the ones in Lekki, VI and Abuja.

For higher education, I prefer public schools. FG owned though. What most parents actually pay for in private universities are just tuition fees which do not necessarily translate to sound education. All through my stay in OAU, Ile-Ife, a FG school, as an undergraduate, I did not pay up to 40,000 naira as tuition fees for the four years I spent. Yet I have not seen (there may be) any graduate of any private university whose parents paid millions that can stand me in my field(s). The graduates of private and state, and some FG universities I saw in the NYSC camp are a disgrace to education.

Re: Private Or Public School. Which Is Better? by rhames(m): 5:05pm On Sep 18, 2013
The school your child attended matters less than you creating time for them whenever they need your guidance. Some parents dont even create time to appraise their children's performance in school. The greatest and the best education a child receives is from the parents. Between the ages of 10 and 18 , i read over 500 books in subjects that did not have any bearing on my career but came out with 3 A's and C's in WAEC Private GCE back in 1990. I could not further my education until some years later. My parents taught me reading culture which is still an integral part of my daily routine. Thats a a legacy I will always remember and thank my parents for forever.

What are you ready to inculcate in your children that will impact forever in their lives?

Private schools are in the ascendancy and public schools are on the decline. A diligent student (appropriately nurtured and spurred on by responsible parents at home) will come good regardless of where he ends up because at the end of the day all education is self education.

360command: Omo guy, private and public schools in 9ja tells a lot difference. One is for the rich and the other is for the poor. In the public, teachings are not been taught as student play truancy. In private, teaching are been thought and he who plays truancy would be reported to the sponsor. In public, you see children coming late to school or closing from school as if its 12pm is d closing time unlike private this does not happen.if you want to dine with the rich, you have to dress in suit. If you want your child to mix with the rich, this is the opportunity cause you will never and I repeat ,never see GEJ child in a govt school even a child who goes to public school fights his way to be somebody so as his children don't go to the public he went to. If you doubt me, ask the comedians.

chimaroke's children went to Fed. Govt College, Enugu.
U can surely see tsome of dem them in govt schs

70% of all private schools in Nigeria are mainly for business purpose where there is the changing of teachers like babies' diapers leading to non continuity of learning, they also employ incompetent teachers or make the competent ones incompetent through cumbersome workload(a teacher teaching 2 or 3 subjects for 2 or 3 classes with 2 or 3 arms),they also pay peanut to teachers and so get monkey output from them, they don't have the necessary educational facilities and malpractice is the bane of most of these schools.
70% of public schools especially in Lagos have well experienced teachers and state of the art educational facilities but the unseriousness of students, dereliction of duties by the teachers and the improper monitoring of these schools by government and ill treatment of teachers is the bane of these schools.
However, for a good foundation,a child should go to a standard private N/P school and later proceed to a standard public school(FGC or model colleges)

lafex: on average private private primarimary schools are better but public secondary schools are better because private primary school teachers have more time for every student as a reault of few studes in each class. But most of the private secondary school students believe that wether they read or not pass is sure and expo is waiting for them in SSCE. while in public secondary secondry schools you are on your own, that is why most of the public school students oerform better during competition and in higher institutions

na dis one dey vex me pass for private schools.
If u are confident abt what u taught ur students d best, y arrange mercenaries to help dem out during Waec and co.
In addition, they connive with waec to make up results for their students even before hand.
There is this missionary sch i know- No student in dat sch must fail waec. I mean no student from dat sch has ever written/ will ever write waec 2x.
No matter how dumb u are.

In most cases, the difference between one school and another is determined by the management/organisational effectiveness. And, while some schools (be it PUBLIC or private) are well structured, with some great teachers etc, others are not.

PS: The ultimate indicator of education quality is the level and quality of learning outcomes.

Let's compare and contrast.
In OYO STATE, which private school is better than Ibadan Grammar Schhol and Government College Ibadan?

In OGUN STATE, which private school is better than MAYFLOWER, Abekouta Grammer school, Ijebu Ode Grammar School, Baptist Boys Grammar School, Orimolusi Grammer School, etc?

In LAGOS STATE, which private school is better than Kings College, Queens College, Methodist Grammer School, etc?

In ONDO STATE, which private school can compete favourably with Oyemekun Grammar School, Stella-Marris, Aquinas Grammar School, etc?

Let even put it this way, most of the best graduating students of different universities we have in this country, do they attend Public or Private Schools?

All the international quiz competitions for primary and secondary schools in this country, how many private school has produced best students for those competitions?

The OP probably picked the topic from 'Your View' on TVC which discussed a similar topic. Public schools also train brilliant students despite dilapidated structures.

I attended a private institution for my primary and secondary school education (I really hate it there! Simply because all my family members attended public institution, it's a family thing), but for my tertiary institution am in a public university, enjoying it so far, if not for the ASUU strike.

From someone who has tasted both sides, I'd like to say this:
If you want your kid to learn how to communicate properly in English, private school is the way to go.

If you want your kid to learn on his/her own, formal education coupled with life survival skills, public school is the way to go.

About standard? That question needs no answer because generally Nigeria's education sector has no standard.

The situation we've found ourseves in Nigeria is so pathetic; where no one may be able to cathegorically say either Public or Private schoo is better. I have taught in more than 5 different schools (from two states) and I can almost safely say Public school is better.........inspite of their many shortcomings. My parameters:
Private schools majorly operate as a business ventures where the sole aim is to better the lot of the proprietor(even at the expense of parents, studends and ofcourse the major victims-Teachers)
Hardly do they have uptodate facilities, ranging from sport field and equipments, well stocked Laboratory/Library etc(Govt may stock its schools once in a long while but that serves generation.
Workload per teacher is terriffic in private school unlike in Public where teacher might not have more than 5periods per week.
Specialisation/professionalism is more visible in public schools than private for example A math teacher, teaches chemistry, physics, even futher Maths and yet still a labour teacher.
Welfare packages and incentives.
Workforce stability(I hope you understand)
There are more qualified teachers in public schools.
Though private schools are equally in grades but overall Public to me is better!
Performance in National(Cowbell, Awokoya etc) competitions is a better yardstick. How many private schools have ever won any of these awrds? I can't remember one.
Though, I may also conclude that private schools do well in Primary sections but Secondary Education is too complex for most of the private schools.

RINE.:
Public is the best cos in public you are left to learn while in private you are forced( most of the time) to learn. How you go learn well wen dem day force you?.
Sometimes na pride day cause am for our parents to send us to public schools...and again competition.
this is the best answer to the question. Though public schools does not have good enivironment that aids education but some of them are equip with better teacher while some private have better environment for learning but in order to maximise their profit they stoop to employ low budget teacher which have low experience inaddition to this we all know there is better working environment in respect to promotion retirement and opportunity in public school which attract good teacher. And moreso private schools only compete themselves for student not for quality. All this my opinions works in the secondary and university level but the primary schools level the private school rules
Re: Private Or Public School. Which Is Better? by uwa1(m): 10:31pm On Sep 18, 2013
For primary and secondary school, Private schls are the best but not 4 higher institution.
Re: Private Or Public School. Which Is Better? by Mccullum: 10:42pm On Sep 18, 2013
Both private & public schools are good but public schools products will always show the true picture of their academic ability while private schools products will be fluent in english language speaking and their academic ability will be on vote of no confidence simply because their authority mostly arranged cheating for them in their final examination, that's why public schools' students mostly wins them in any competition.... I think public schools still good only if the parent can arrange home lesson for their children which applicable to students in private as well, with undisputable fact the private school is good in nursery and primary levels than that of public schools.

Hated it because, all my family members went to public school; My dad, mum and elder brother. Twas so important that I attend the same school because everyone of them was a prefect when they were there.

[b][size=16pt]It's not much about Private or Public Education - it's about the 'Child's ability to learn and the Family Values' that enforces that learning. After all, all schools follow similar curriculum set by the state education system as it is, in the West and I ask - what's the difference?

I can not vouch for other education system especially, those in the 3rd World as people do what they like, there - there's no effective regulation to monitor and guide things.

Well, let's not detract from the point again, children will learn when they are ready to learn and by nature, humans learn from experiences in their life's journey but how could a child make an effort to learn in school when parents are prepared to cover the cracks in their learning and education?

With parents as this, providing children with false-hope - would they ever bother to learn? Of course, not!

Imagine parents, instilling in their children the belief that, it is normal to gain access to anything in life through deceit and lies. I am s o r r y !!!!

Is this the kind of example, parents should set for their children?

This kind of behaviour not only exposes their family values, but also queries how the parents themselves gained their own education and the authenticity of their qualifications/current positions.

And these parents, do they actually believe in hard work, one would ask?

It does not seem so - if one should begin to trace their trail he/she would come out with a lot of worms in the tin. I would assume, a family whose foundation is built on fraud that, emanated not from this present generation but from their great-grandad - too bad!

Finally, sending a child to Private or Public school as we know it in the West - in my view, is a waste of money and the only benefit I could see is, children being exposed to 'Influential connections or contacts' that could help them in life, and this can also be gained at the University level anyway, for example, where did Kate meet William? Was it not at the University in Scotland, abi?

Also, in this day and age - the social media is very handy in connecting people so, what's the big deal?

Re: Private Or Public School. Which Is Better? by Standing5(m): 9:44am On Sep 19, 2013
I know private schools get a lot of bashing from the public schools people, but how do those in public schools really lay claim to a superior system when 35-40% of the entire workload is 'sort'-ed out financially|sexually with corrupt lecturers and another 10-15% is circumvented either by cheating in exams or intimidating lecturer's. The only advantage a public has over a private school is the subbsidized fees which attracts lots of student to choose from, and even at that, it hasn't translated to any meaningful progress in terms addmitting the best students.
Plus post-ume kind of exams is the brain child of private schools, add that to the fact that some rules in private schools are being copied by public schools. UI is a good example.
