Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Abdulahi Dabo said yesterday that the government has increased the salary of primary school teachers in the state.

He said henceforth, instead of the N200 million allocated for payment of teachers salary previously, N1.2 billion will now be spent on the exercise monthly.

Dabo stated this when he received a team from the School Base Management Committees (SBMC) of Maiturare Junior Secondary School led by their chairman Malam Ibrahim Baraya.

"Since 2007, teachers salary has been gulping N200 million monthly, but from the end of this month, the state will be spending N1.2 billion on their salary. There is however no justification for such huge expenditure, if a JSS three student cannot read and write," he said.

Daily Trust gathered that NCE holders on Level 7 step 2, who were collecting N14,459,54 k before the increment, are now receiving N34,125,71k as salary.

Dabo said the state is making efforts to rid public schools of unqualified teachers, who according to him are not adding any value to the education sector.

He said one of the major objectives of setting up the management committees is to involve everybody in the management of schools located within their respective communities.

Dabo added that the committees are expected to among other things monitor the teachers in their respective schools with a view to ensuring quality service delivery.

"Supervise the schools to ensure that teachers perform their duties accordingly, because they are not working for free. Report to us any teacher that is not qualified or lacks the strength to deliver sound education and we will take proper action," he said.

Leader of the team, Malam Ibrahim Baraya, said the aim of their visit was to thank the board and the state government for renovating and equipping school with modern facilities.
