One of the most shocking stories was that of pregnant man Thomas Beatie, a former woman who defended his right to give birth, saying he had a “right to have a biological child.” Beatie, 34, gave birth to a girl, Susan, June 29.

His wife, Nancy, had had a hysterectomy and so could not carry a child. “I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs, because I wanted to have a child one day,” Beatie told Oprah Winfrey during an April interview.

His wife inseminated Beatie with a syringe using sperm purchased from a sperm bank.

Beatie revealed to Barbara Walters in November that he and his wife are expecting their second child.
