OP, maybe it's because most vehicles come with LHD because we have more countries in the world using LHD than RHD.

nagoma: In the early seventies ( 1972 I think) when the change occurred uniformity was being encouraged world wide. More countries were driving on the right hand side of the road except countries with British colonial background. Nigeria was ( and is) surrounded by countries with French colonial history who had always been driving on the right. ( Benin republic, Cameroon, Niger and chad) their drivers use our Nigerian ports and our drivers delivered goods to those countries with much confusion. It made much sense to make that change. America and Britain are simply proud and feel important so they refuse to change from their imperial systems. It is the same with metric system; only in America and UK do you hear of awkward measurements in miles, pounds ,stones , ounces and inches.

That is it. The ONLY sensible reason of the lot here and that should explain why Ghana had to change as well. The entire W/African belt is dominated by the Francophone bloc and the need to evolve a seamless business flow would have trigerred the change.
Thank you, Nagoma, for your insightful post.

Aha... Naptu to the rescue, yet again. grin

This time the credit goes to nagoma, not naptu. Naptu only plagiarized nagoma's answer and that of some members of the house. Please read nagoma's post above.

Re: Why Did Nigeria Change From Righthand Drive To Lefthand Drive? by gaventa: 9:45pm On Sep 24, 2013
It is simply because most nigerians are right-handed....iand its quite easier 2 drive from d left side.

bornagain1509: I guess its because of Agberos since they are mostly on the right side of buses so in order to be far from them you know.

......and the police, Lastma and those V.I.O bastards. Their harassments are just too much now. They're not there to keep the traffic flowingbut to collect 'egunje'.

Well I think we changed from RHD to LHD because we wanted our independent blueprint visibled. As we want to be fully recognised as an independent state. So we changed somethings about ourself then eg police uniform, currency, from RHD to LHD, National flag, National anthem, etc.

Can anyone confirm that Nigeria changed from lefthand drive to righthand drive in 1925 and then 'back' to lefthand drive in 1972?

The very last change was simply to show further independence from Britain.

Most of the world uses the lefthand drive system for a very simple reason - to leave the right hand free to do things as most people are right handed.

HISTORY
In the late 1700s when farm products were being hauled in large wagons the drivers sat on the left and used their right arms to whip the horses... naturally they wanted 'traffic' to pass them on the lefthand side so they could look down and make sure they kept clear of the oncoming wagon’s wheels. Therefore they kept to the 'right side' of the road.

The first law 'ever' requiring drivers to keep right was passed in Pennsylvania in 1792.

Oh and by the way I don't know this stuff... na small Internet research reveal am. But it's interesting to know. OP well done, very good question... and of course thanks to those with really funny answers lol.

Ok..though Nigeria currently drive on the RIGHT HAND, as indicated by the position of the GEAR..The country changed to a RIGHT HAND drive and the specific date is April 2, 1972. Nigeria's government felt that it needed to change from left-hand driving to further illustrate it's independence from the British.
Re: Why Did Nigeria Change From Righthand Drive To Lefthand Drive? by oladunwo(m): 8:00am On Sep 26, 2013
Its because of the direction of our road. In a situation where by we are driving left handed cars, perssenger dat wanna highlight would be able to do so on the saver side of the road but if its a right handed hehicle, reverse is the case in nigeria, coz of the direction of the road. There is notin special about right or left handed vehicles, is just the direction of road dat matter. ####### shikena#####

Re: Why Did Nigeria Change From Righthand Drive To Lefthand Drive? by hemartins(m): 1:03pm On Sep 26, 2013
it is because drivers drive in a certain direction. The left hand drive positions the driver at the center of the road making it safe to cover a wide area of view unlike the right hand drive.

We are urgently in need of 20 Tonnages trucks (Box body-Tractor) to convey our light products such as: BISCUITS-Mc-Vite, DAIPERS, KETCHUP, etcetera.

The job is a continous one as we distribute from Lagos (our Head Quarters) across Nigeria to our various warehouses (Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo, Delta, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, Anambra, Rivers, Ogun, etcetera).

Call: 0803-054-6462-Pastor Cyrus Jesunifemi (generalcyruss@yahoo.com) for details.
