There are two reasons for the change.

1) Most countries permit left hand drive (LHD) cars which drive on the right side of the road (RHT). This was the case in all of Nigeria's neighbours. So, if you wanted to drive from Lagos to Lome, you had to learn to drive on the opposite side of the road. Changing to LHD simply made things easier and meant that we drove on the same side of the road as most other countries.

2) The only reason why we used RHD cars and drove on the left was because we were colonised by the United Kingdom. Well, most African countries wanted to show that they could make their own decisions and did not have to conform with whatever their former colonial masters did. Nigeria was no exception. So the government decided to go with the system that's used by most countries in the world, rather than the system that's used by its former colonial master.

How do u know everything most of d time.

I think 1. because by far most countries use
LHD ..2. ....it made sense for Nigeria to drive on the same side as its neighbours and 3. ....most importantly...there were no local "LHD to RHD mechanics" to convert the luxurious cars the ogas wanted....so if Muhammad couldn't go to the mountain.....

Siena:

Really? There was widespread importation of cars into Nigeria from North America back in 1972?
Our source of "new cars" were very limited as most of the modern world were on Left Hand Drive vehicles. I mean Major Car Manufacturers (aside Japan) drive on the use "Lefty cars".

Just imagine if we were still on "Righty" up till now? grin grin

Even U.K would have changed to 'Lefty' if not that they wanted to protect their "Home Market" so that British Citizens would find it difficult to buy "cheaper cars" from other E.U countries (But Nigeria does not have such qualms as we dont produce nadda!).
Same reason why they wont join the Euro Monetary Zone and spend Euro ...but want to benefit from the free-Trade Eurozone!

After the civil war our then leaders wanted to re-brand Nigeria hence, they started changing everything like National anthem, our currency. Etc.

nagoma: In the early seventies ( 1972 I think) when the change occurred uniformity was being encouraged world wide. More countries were driving on the right hand side of the road except countries with British colonial background. Nigeria was ( and is) surrounded by countries with French colonial history who had always been driving on the right. ( Benin republic, Cameroon, Niger and chad) their drivers use our Nigerian ports and our drivers delivered goods to those countries with much confusion. It made much sense to make that change. America and Britain are simply proud and feel important so they refuse to change from their imperial systems. It is the same with metric system; only in America and UK do you hear of awkward measurements in miles, pounds ,stones , ounces and inches.

It is not a must to give answers to what u don't know on Nairaland , rather keep quiet or do simple research by checking internet or asking elderly people around you about things like this instead of writing stupi..d comments. Our youths should learn to be sensible and responsible.
Well done for posting the right reasons.
My old man told me same thing decades ago.

naptu2: The old Carter Bridge.

You can see that we also drove on the left side of the road (LHT) before 1972. If you wanted to drive to Benin Republic or Togo, you had to learn to drive on the other side of the road.

Today the traffic flow is reversed.

@naptu2 Thanks. I can't believe it took 2 pages to get facts and not speculations! Chai, it isn't a must to comment, Nigerians seem to peddle thoughts/conspiracy theories on their head simply because it's easy to put there.

One is well aware it occurred during Gen YG's regime and our foreign policy then too was African when we were playing BBA. Ironically, this change to LHD is found on history books, 'know Nigeria' materials etc. Thanks again naptu, Nigerians need to really know their country before jumping into things!!!

Na the same thing, think am well. If we are using right hand drive, the driver will be on the right while agberos will be on the left.

*solid*:
it's more comfy to drive lefty.
It's because we are already used to it. South Africans will also tell you that it's more comfortable to drive RHD vehicle.
