ts a good intention, but the their mode of carrying out this good intention is a thing of concern. Why ban importation when the existing auto manufacturing/assembly plants are in a state of comatose and other allied industries are virtually absent? Why don't the government create an enabling, competitive, condusive environment for automobile manufacturing/assembly through (Public Private Partnership) PPP, revive the exisiting assembly plants, create stable power supply, revamp steel and aluminium plants, revamp rail transports, and create tax holidays for companies willing to come and invest in Automobile busines in Nigeria for a period of 3-5years, strengthen customs operation at the borders etc before completely banning used vechicles from entering the country.
Btw, hope this law applies to EVERYBODY and not just the masses alone?

In other Nations of the world, the dog wags its tail, but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case, the tail wags the dog Why?

"...The council also approved a total sum of
N41 billion for the provision of road and
other infrastructures in the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT)..."

Hope such money isnt going to be spent in developed/built up high brow areas such as Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, etc what about spreading the infrastructures to the satellite towns and villages around FCT or even to other states?

Why is Nigerian Government keep wasting resources on unattainable project...my point is successive government never learn from previous mistake... Why embarking on elephant project that you cannot maintain... What happen to Volkswagen of Nigeria , Peugeot automobile Nigeria, are assembling cars plant decaying and fading away.. . why banning importation of foreign cars? we cannot even make spare part for local vehicle? Our government need to develop Ajaokuta and other steel complex to enable us, manufacture basic car component and spares, gradually we move on to develop our own car. The problem with our government they never carry out planning, research and viability of these paddy paddy project, that will enrich their own pocket, because no one will make them accountable....Please don't ban importation of cars as it will create scarcity and high prices on local available vehicles.

[quote
author=ebenezer4o2]Let's talk about the economic implications of this
if followed to the letter.

If such cars are stoped from being imported into Nigeria, then here
ceases to be a dumping ground and hence an increase in the assembly of
local automobiles thereby fostering Job creation in the industry.

It brings about an equilibrium,to an extent in the export multiplier
process thereby stabilizing the economy.

It also helps to spring up subsidiary industries.

All these are measures put together by the FG to strenghten the Naira
and improve the economy as a whole.More are yet to come, kudos to the
FG.[/quote]
This is how intelligent people reason; not everytime is devoted to insulting their president. Good of you

A big one. These law makers, no be Landcruiser and Prado them dey drive? Some dey even drive Escalade. They will continue to drive their foreign made cars/jeeps even 100yrs from now. If they want to patronize Naija auto industry they need to start driving Naija made jeeps.

Since the government says that a large sum of money is being spent on importing cars i.e mostly through cotonou why shouldn't the government makes way such that cars would be imported from the western world to Nigerian porta directly so that the amount that the Nation loses would be reduce greatly.

My Oga at The Top:
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, joined by his Trade and Investments counterpart, Olusegun Aganga, told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that the new automotive policy was to encourage local manufacture of vehicles.

See what we are saying, if tomorrow now, these ones die in a plane crash or one motor accident, we go dey plaster R.I.P to them but pray me, these guy loot enough money buy as many brand new cars as they want (they even buy private jet) yet the masses who work hard all day saving their little money, bit-by-bit, are about to be deprived of the benefit to buy what they want with it!

See wickedness ...... and you say NEMESIS should keep quiet, right? Okay now. wink wink

A couple of years back, a genius in Aso Rock decided to ban cars over 5 yrs old. After a couple of months with nothing imported into naija, everyone was using Cotonou no revenue, they changed it to 8 yrs' 3 yrs later it became 10-15yrs.

If they claim Nigerians spend $3bn importing used cars, FG got $1bn (30%) of it as duty now that goes to Cotonou.

Most of the cars sold in Naija were shipped by people who live and made that money abroad as a way of getting their earning back home as something more valuable than the useless cash it will end up as.

On most good used car sold in Naija more money is paid as duty than profit made by seller,

well i think with the current incident being noticed here and there i think the FG should include tokunbo planes to the list of tokunbo items to be phased out.
Good though by the federal goverment if and only if the announced manufacturers like toyota, Gm and so on by Aganga are true

Good intention, terrible idea.
A great number of those imported cars belong to politicians. What he needs to do is implement a plan that would necessitate a minimum 30% of government automobile purchase is from indigenous manufacturers like innoson. Increase passenger automobile import charges and registration fees.
Re: FG To Phase Out Tokunbo Cars by mayysen(f): 4:25pm On Oct 04, 2013
IMO, the FG could have given those automobile industries that a great no of nigerians patronise their products, esp..toyota, kia, benz e.t.c an ultamatum of 3yrs to establish an assembly plant here or increase the import tarrif by a high percentage or at worst ban it fron entering nigeria and lets see what happens then
atleast, this will create more jobs and encourage locally assemblied or made cars.

If the government is reading this post.Tokunbo cars is not our immediate problem that require urgent attention but scrapped aircrafts from foreign countries used as passengers death traps to kill innocent citizens boarding commercial so called aircrafts to their various destinations. I think this aviation sector require a highly qualified Minister who knows the rudiment of aviation in general. Tired of all these politIcal jobbers without professional track record of performance. Only specialise in awarding and signing bogus contract papers every now and then while people are dying innocently. Please sir, Your. Excellency, Mr President do something in the aviation sector fast. Our love ones are dying untimely. Please sir.

When I read this comment and saw the over "61 likes" - I first felt "this man has spoken the mind of Nigerians".

But if you look around you, you would find similar threads started on the same subject, and it seems this particular one has more intelligent people on board so I chose to speak here.

Here's my take on the issue:

1. Should we ban importation of used cars?
Yes

Key Benefit: Strengthen reserves, Cushion the exchange rate index to strengthen & permanently stabilize the NGN/USD, Revamps the Steel industry *a very key local content* etc

2. Should the factories be based in Abuja?
Yes, for now

Key Benefit: Centralized control, easy distribution of newly produced cars, verifiable / measurable impact, sustainable security for investors

3. What about Power supply. Is it possible?
Yes, your country Nigeria honors international agreements

Key Benefit: A dedicated grid supplies power to the plants/industrial area 24/7 just like its commercial sale to neighboring countries, so it's very possible.
Moreso, the Abuja location of the plants makes it easy to implement a dedicated power generation & distribution, under licensed supply.
(Lokoja is close by.)

4. Higher Institutions: Will they play any important role?
an emphatic Yes!

Key Benefit: This move is labor-intensive!
The more engineers you have with skill and knowledge in the automobile industry, the easier it is to expand production. Hence, schools will be the major input and you can bet Nigeria's education in that area will grow to meet the demand. (If you doubt that, go to America and see what our doctors from Nigeria are doing over there! In this case it's purely Physics & Mathematics. Even better!)

If you have any intelligent addition, please add & don't throw tantrums (I'm not here for that).
But, we all know we'll be 10x better to save our money and keep it circulating here than to throw it away for the love of tokunbo cars. N600 billion annual loss is not a joke if you know your macro-economics very well.

I rest my case.
