Age does'nt really matter on aircraft hence d normal maintainance e.g changin of old parts 2 new ones from d factory always, even d cargo plane we use 2 go to G/B 4 Peacekeeping is more dan 38 yrs yet is stil great on air, so once d maintainance is routinely carried out, there ll b no problem.

A higher number of people lost their lives on the boat mishap on River Niger just last week and not this much noise was made. However, even if it`s an empty aircraft that crashes in Nigeria, we no go hear word for the next 5 weeks.
Its sad, but all over the world, its an acceptable norm! Air crashes get more attention than any other from of transport accident. Soon we will see more world leaders sending condolences to the govt.

According to what i heard, that plane had been on the tarmac for over a year idling away. The sponsor of the flight approached one of the airline that offer charter services but the price quoted made him run to Associated Airline despite having existing relationship with the former. They were able to save some millions of naira but at what cost.

The united states of america has one of the best air safety records but they don't have age limits on planes. Rather, they invest heavily on maintenace and aircraft inspectors, to make sure that every plane that takes off is sound and stable. Let's not make ourselves belive that whenever a plane crashes, age is the culpit. Rather our governent should invest more in aircraft inspection, before takeoff and after landing.

Based on comments here, it shows nigerians are used to tokunbo things. grin You can't compare the air-worthiness of a brand new plane to a 23 year old, no matter the maintenance. There is no plane more than 10 years old in Qatar airlines, real and thorough maintenance are carried out as at when due. Poverty and corruption kill alot.

Why do you think that a 23yr old plane cannot pass airworthiness inspection if properly maintained? The airplane could have been 23yrs but the number of miles flown on the Airframe may be less compared to others in other fleet. You work for Qatar airline maintenance to know such information and to be 100% about it, the way some of you talk sometimes can be annoying.

Does the age of the plane matter ? What has happened to maintenance ? Other airlines have old planes and they still work fine. Lord help us all. sad

A 23-yr. old aircraft definitely needs to be maintained more than a brand new or young aircraft. Maintenance culture is a foreign concept in Nigeria, as evidenced by our decaying infrastructure, our decapitated airports, our run down transportation buses, and so on. An aircraft is a very sophisticated machine that needs to be maintained according to manufacturer's specification. Now if common BRT buses and electric sliding doors cannot be maintained in Nigeria, what makes you think that an aircraft--given its level of complexity--can be properly maintained?

Moreover, the fact that maintenance was allegedly performed in June in and of itself is insufficient to show that the maintenance was performed to meet international standards. The maintenance may have been negligently or recklessly done or, given Nigeria's level of corruption, may not have been done at all but written down as if it were done. The aircraft owners may have bribed the inspector or official responsible for approving the inspection report, that is if there is any such inspector in the first place. Even if any such inspector existed, there is an issue as to whether the inspector had the requisite education, training, or experience for an airline inspector. The inspector, if any, may likely have gotten his or her job not based on merit but based on his connections with an, as we all know, " oga at the top."

Hence, the reasons of Nigeria's abysmal aviation record, despite being Africa's second largest economy.

23 years old is not too old as an aircraft if it was maintained properly. Don't delude yourself by thinking they don't have old aircrafts in developed countries. They just maintained it properly.

E don crash, e don crash. Politicians, fix the darn roads! More people die in road accidents in this country than in air mishaps but `no-one` seems to notice.
Almost every air crash involving commercial carriers make news around the world. The Lagos crash is no different. Road accidents? Ha!...unless is like a bus crash with lots of casualties.

The aircraft should have been decommissioned a long time ago.

October 04, 2013

The chief operating officer of Associated Aviation , Alhaji Taiwo Raji confirmed yesterday that the ill- fated aircraft was 23 years of age, even as he said the last maintenance on the aircraft was carried out on June 14, 2013. The airline official said the ill- fated aircraft flew on August 30. He said the airline has ten aircraft six of which are serviceable . The explained :” Flight 361 departed Lagos en route Akure when it crashed.
Of the 20 passengers that were on board, 13 have been confirmed dead, while there are seven survivors. Of the seven survivors , five of them are at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital . One of them is at the Nigeria Air Force Hospital , while the other survivor is at the Federal Medical Centre at Ebute Meta..”He said the airline has already informed some family members. He added that the airline has a valid insurance cover for the aircraft with SEMA Insurance company , which is covered by Nigeria- Re- Insurance.

Sunny_bobo: What's wrong with an aircraft being 23 years old?

there is every thing wrong with a 23yrs old aircraft. If you drive you know that even after 10ys a car feels different no matter how you maintain it.

It may still drive but it will require more maintenance and will breakdown more frequently.

not to talk of a 23yrs old airplane.
