Private Schools In Nigeria: A Menace Or Treasure. by 4reigningqueen: 2:21pm On Oct 16, 2013
Case Study: Queenmaris College, Ikotun.

This article is not aimed at distroying the 'business' of anybody but to show the danger our future is in as a result of the gross negligence our education sector has been experiencing both by the government and private school owners.

Queenmaris Group of Schools is a school that was established in the '90s and started with a Nursery and Primary at Iyana Isheri, Ijegun-Ikotun Road, Ikotun. Now, with hard work and dedication by the owner of the school, it has grown wide with a secondary school and three branches within the same local government, that is, the head quater at iyana-isheri,a branch at community road,Ijegun and Isuti road, Egan, Igando. A new one has just been opened at Ejigbo which means there are four branches of the same school within a locality.

Establishing schools is not really the problem here but the quality of what the students are given.

Just last week, Wednesday and Thursday the 9th and 10th of October to be precise, the J.S.S and the S.S. Teachers of the head quater went on strike over the non payment of September salary but went back to work on Friday after they received alert around 2pm on Thursday. If this were to happen in public schools, we will probably say we are used to it but a private school?

One thing that is notable in this school is the level of teachers rotation. By this i mean the rate at which teachers are changed is so alarming that you can have three different teachers taking a subject in a term and at the end of the term, the students are confused. One thing that is very important when setting up a school is that, there should be a mission and vission which will guide in the employment of teachers and enrolment of students but this important factor is lacking that every Tom, Joystick and Harry can be a teacher in this school and a student that has been expelled in about 2 or 3 other schools will be admitted as long as they have the money. An example is a student named Lekan and his brother now in S.S.3 at the Egan branch of the school. Mere looking at them, you will withdraw your child immediately from the school, that is if you love them, to avoid them being influenced negatively.

There is nothing the management of the school is doing to make the teachers happy because non of them has ever been motivated or encouraged in any form. How will these people then give their best if they are not happy?

These and more are really happening in our schools and is jeopardising the future of our kids. I cannot call on the government to do anything because they themselves have proved over the years to be irresponsible and clueless.

My call goes to the parents. Find out what is going on in your childrens' school and demand they give them the best. Insist they they organise parents-teachers association meeting, ask questions and most importantly, pay your Childrens' school fees at the begining of every time to avoid disrupting their education.

God Bless Our Children!
God Bless Nigeria!
