THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has said that contrary to claims by the family of the released sister of President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Mrs. Augusta Douglas-Ayam, the sum of $200,000 (N32m) was paid as ransom.

MEND in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, on Saturday, said though the victim was released unharmed, she developed high blood pressure and malaria while in captivity.

The militant group also said it was responsible for the destruction of feeder pipelines and well heads in Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta states from October 20, 2013 to October 26.

The group also claimed it had engaged some members of the Joint Military Task Force in a shootout and killed three soldiers and one policeman contrary to the statement issued by the JTF that armed robbers ambushed its men.

“The sister of Mr. Oronto Douglas, special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research and Strategy was released unharmed as we promised. She however had developed high blood pressure and malaria during her captivity.

“Contrary to the claim the family made in a press statement that no ransom was paid, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta  can authoritatively confirm that the sum of $200,000 was paid as ransom.

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta now has agents inside every oil company. In neighbouring Rivers State, on that same day that the Warri Refinery was sabotaged, a Joint Task Force escort gun boat was engaged in a shootout in the Andoni Local Government area.”

It stated that contrary to the report given by the Nigerian Army spokesman, the soldiers were not ambushed but confronted and the attackers were not armed robbers but MEND fighters. It said the attack resulted in  the killing of three soldiers and a policeman.

MEND decried the action of some ex-militants who had been paid to declare that militancy ended in 2009, saying, “As they continue to delude themselves, display their ignorance and irrelevance, the region, as can be seen by the world is in turmoil that can no longer be hidden.”

That's Nigeria for you. Most of these people are commoners with no responsible background which is why they will make sure they loot as much as possible when they get elected / appointed for political offices. Corruption thrives when riff raffs are ruling because they have a lot of stuff to cover up in their miserable lives.

I guess that pix up there was taken many years before her brother became SA to broda Joe. I trust Naija government officials, once dem climb position dem dey always make sure say even to their fifth cousins sef no go see suffer again at all. I once met a guy who owns a mansion in maitama and drives around town in the latest Mercedes G-wagon, when I asked my friend what this man does for a living to have acquired so much wealth.. Here's my friends response; "Na wah for you o, you no know say na governor brother be that ba". Since when did "brother to the governor" become a career? Chai! Smh @ Naija.

not as if the citizens are smarter than the police, of course the police are trained citizens.

Are police equipped as expected?
Just imagine spending those billions of naira paid to those touts to protect the oil pipelines on nigerian police and observe if there won't be change.

It just unfortunate that most political appointees don't make any impact on their family or the entire community were they come from.

They always claim that no money was paid but its all lies. Even bishops and pastors when kidnapped, pay to regain their freedom. The rich ditto the church should learn to impact society via education and infrastructural development.

Shepopotamus (n)(singular): A female hippopotamus of the genus from the Niger Delta.

MEND should not forget it was Public Sympathy that led to the Amnesty and not dia Sabotage alone!
Once u lose public sympathy in any Struggle, Your End is near!
I expected the Ex-militants that made it Big to take Philanthropy to another level!
I expected them to Struggle with Govt in buying the Hearts of Farmers & Fishermen in d ND buying doling out Free Boats and Building Structures for them!
Look at the Zapatistas in Mexico! They lost the War but still possess a firm grip over their People through Popular Projects!

I'm dissapointed in Tompolo and Co. They sold their People's future for money!
