An operative of the Ogun State Vigilance Service, Liasu Oyedele, has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping a female student of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta.
The 30-year-old vigilante officer was said to have committed the crime on Monday night at Alewenu village, adjacent the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) headquarters.
It was alleged that the suspect accosted the victim, an ND1 banking and finance student of MAPOLY, who was on her way to a group reading session in preparation for the institution’s second semester examination around Onikolobo, Abeokuta.
It was gathered that the suspect was nabbed by passers-by and taken to the Ibara divisional police station, Abeokuta.
The victim (name withheld) was said to have been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, students of the polytechnic staged a protest to the office of the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The aggrieved students described the alleged rape as “barbaric” and called on the state government to urgently bring the suspected vigilance officer to justice.
The coordinator of Child Protection Network, Mrs Peju Osoba, who addressed the students, appealed to them to remain calm, saying, “It is a crime against the state and the Child Protection Network will ensure that justice is achieved,” she said.
The acting police public relations officer in the state, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrest of the vigilante officer and said he would be transferred to the state police command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta for further investigation.

Justice Oyejide Falola of an Osun State High Court has him self to blame for the rampant cases of rape in the South west because of his infamous acquittal of Oba Adebukola Alli ,Alowa of Ilowa-Ijesa in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State,, who had been standing trial over alleged rape of a former National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, Miss Helen Okpara for the past three year

hear the foolish judge

Justice Falola, in his judgment, held that the complainant failed to show to the court bruises as evidence that she was raped, noting that the prosecutor also failed to show to the court her torn clothes as she had claimed in her submissions before the court. - See more at: Delivering his judgment, Justice Falola said Miss Okpara failed to tender enough exhibits to convince the court beyond reasonable doubt that she was raped by Oba Alli.
He submitted that a case of rape can only be established with exhibits, which include the used bed sheet, the victim’s pants and a medical report which indicates forceful penetration, adding that the prosecutor failed to tender all these.
