PDP crisis: NRC board passes vote of no confidence in Baraje

MEMBERS of the board of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), on Tuesday, passed a vote of no confidence in its chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje.

The board members, in a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan, which was sent through the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, accused Baraje of dereliction of duty.

The members said that Baraje had failed to promptly convene board meetings as prescribed by the NRC Act.

In the letter dated November 6, 2013, the board members said it was statutory for the board to hold a minimum of four and maximum of eight meetings in a quarter.

The letter, signed by the committee chairman on mechanical, electrical, signal and telecommunication, Mr Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, was said to have enjoyed the support of other members of the board.

They expressed concern at the inability of the board under Baraje to meet up with the minimum requirement in the last quarter, and pointed out that the board was yet to have a meeting in the current quarter.

The petition, which was also copied to Vice President Namadi Sambo and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, indicated that Baraje’s “inability or refusal” to convene board meetings, as statutorily prescribed, had stalled progress of the board in the discharge of its duties.”

The letter, entitled “A vote of no confidence in Alhaji Kawu Baraje, chairman, NRC Board of Directors,” read in part: “We, concerned members of the board of directors of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have painstakingly reviewed the activities, in recent times, of the board chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje and come to the conclusion that his conduct is a violation of the NRC constitution and, therefore, not in the interest of the corporation.

“We wish to inform you of the persistent inability of the board chairman to promptly convene board meetings as prescribed by NRC Act.

“It is statutory for the board to hold a minimum of four and a maximum of eight meetings in every quarter of the year, in order to effectively discharge the statutory obligation of the board, in line with the President’s Transformation Agenda.

“It is of great concern that, the board did not meet up with the minimum requirement in the last quarter and is yet to have a meeting in the new quarter, which is almost coming to an end.”
