La Rochelle: Hi Beau. I'm presently on low cut, planning on making my hair afro. The problem is that my hair is what they call rubber hair. It usually forms what my sister calls "chewing gum" in front, as in round round. You get? Is this afro thing viable for my kind of hair? Also, how will I keep my hair in check so that it can grow normally for an afro?

As long as you are African, afro is viable for your hair, you hair sounds like its very pretty, just allow it to grow and be beautiful no matter how it forms. My hair cant form a proper fro either because my curls are slightly looser than normal. But I still grow it natural, I just allow it to grow and try and style it to look nice because my hair wont stay up and form a traditional afro. Can you show me a picture of your hair so I get a better understanding? You can upload it here or send me a message on beautifullynappy@gmail.com

Great tips! Thank you smiley

I have unequal hair(not split ends. I trim off my split ends every 4-6mths). Looks like new growth, but since i began using shea butter and coconut oil on my hair it's been growing at an alarming rate! My hair is annoying me right now, pls what do i do about it?
I've been toying with the idea of chopping off the old growth to even the length, but just too chicken to do that sad and still unsure if it'll work.

My other issue is hair breakage. Someone suggested steaming, but i am aware heat isn't good for our hair. Help pls?

My hair frizz a lot, I want this gone pls, and what do I use for fuller hair(body and shine wink )

Also any tips for taking care of hair in weaves? I understand there's always the constant lack of moisture. Pls give responses based on Nigeria climate smiley

Thanks for all the replies so far, i've learned a lot.

You are welcome,

Coconut oil and sheabutter are amazing for the hair! Keep using them smiley

You can trim it to make it even, but I dont see the big fuss about uneven hair. My hair isnt perfectly even either but no one notices because its natural and curly to you cant easily tell. If its not greatly uneven then I think you should just let it be.

Steaming is really good for the hair, well dry heat from blow dryers, straighteners and the sun break the hair. The moist steam helps the hair absorb conditioners better and reduces breakage because it makes the hair more elastic and less prone to snapping. Also how do you comb your hair? Thats a major promoter of hair breakage. Make sure your hair is damp, not wet but damp when you comb it. Comb with a wide tooth comb, and comb your hair in manageable sections from tips to root. This also encourages thickness because you loose less hair when you comb your hair this way.

If your hair is a natural then it will always be frizzy, learn to love your frizz! smiley You can do a twist out, so your hair is curly but less frizzy. For shine, you can spray diluted (1 Cup of ACV and 2 Cups of water) Apple Cider vinegar on your hair leave for 5mins on your hair and then rinse of before you shampoo and condition.

For shine you can put also coconut oil on your hair while its dry, cover your hair with a plastic cap for 30mins, then style as normal. You can also do this everytime before you shampoo and condition. smiley

Also, if your hair is natural it will have a healthy full look as long as you eat well and care for it properly. But you cant get it to shine like relaxed hair or a weave.

I dont like weaves, because they itch my scalp. But I read somewhere that you can mix water and oil and place in an applicator bottle, and squeeze the water and oil mix through the applicator bottle directly on your scalp while its in a weave. However, I recently put a post on my blog on how to care for your hair in braids if you are interested in that as well. Have a blessed day smiley

CaptCindie: hello nappy,I really need suggestions on how to make my hair long, its n the average level, but I want it longer, pls what can I use?

1. Moisturize: Spray water first, the seal the water in with an oil or butter (sheabutter etc). Dry hair will always break of, and water is our only source of moisture all other hair oils are sealants or grease.
2. Sleep with a satin cap: Helps preserve moisture and prevents your hair from breaking (i.e. prevent the harsh material in our bed sheets from drying and pulling out our hair strands)
3. Stay way from bad chemicals: In order words try and be as natural as possible, many products in already made shampoos, conditioners and creams are bad for our hair such as alcohol, petroleum jelly, parabens, silicons etc. I dont have the energy to go through all the ingredients so I shampoo(wash) and condition with 100% natural things and use natural oils and butters only. A good natural shampoo easily available in Nigeria is Dudu Osun.
4. Comb your hair while its damp with a wide tooth comb: Combing hair dry breaks the hair and makes your scalp hurt. Also using small combs pull our too much hair, which makes our hair scanty.
6. Section your hair before your comb it: Divide your hair into manageable sections, then dampen your hair and comb it from tip to root. This reduces are loss and improves thickness.
7. Low manipulation: Leave your hair alone, dont brush or comb it to often or change styles to often. Keep it in a protective style for at least 2-3 weeks. Protective styles include braids, weaves, twists and simple updos
8. Eat right and drink lots of water: Dark green vegetables like spinach, avocado, eggs, fruits are essential for healthy hair. Hair growth starts from within. Also take vitamin supplements like Vitamin B complex or Vitamin A-Z to make sure you get all the nutrients necessary to grow thick long hair.

Right from when i was little,i've alwaysed had thin, scanty and short hair. Once it grows to an extent,it starts breaking. I admit i've made mistakes with my hair when relaxing, braiding and weaving it. I've observed that i'm gradually losing my frontal hair even when i've stopped relaxing my hair often and use shea butter as my hair cream. I've learnt alot from your previous posts but i need an exact fast remedy to reverse hair loss and thining. Thank you.

You can also use 1 Table Spoon of Lemon and 5 Table Spoons of Coconut oil leave on your scalp for 30mins and rinse. You can repeat this up to twice a week, same with the Apple Cider Vinegar remedy ( pick any) if the dandruff and itching is severe. Have a lovely day and I hope this helps.

i know of coconut hair cream. i guess it's not d same with coconut oil. how do i get this coconut oil pls? is it sold in the market or i have to make it from coconut?

maureenkell: Pls my front hair have cut finish wat will i do pls

Try not to do tight hair styles. One of the major causes of frontal hair loss is tight hair. When you hair is pulled too tightly in any style its creates pressure on the scalp that results in hair loss from the roots and breakage. When your hair is braided, make sure the hair stylist picks the hair gently, make sure they dont sew your weaves tightly and dont pack your hair tightly either. Try massaging the area with coconut oil daily, or you can mix the coconut oil with some rosemary oil as well. Any style that puts pressure on your scalp will eventually cut your hair

Hello, the basics are the same, but I will do a more detailed post after I am done studying for my exam. Several people have asked this question and here is my response:

1. If you are always doing tight hair styles please stop, because every time we over pressure our scalp by pulling our hair we cause hair loss, and if we do this repeatedly then permanent hair loss can sometimes occur. Dont do your matting, braids, weaves and even packing tightly. Try and even avoid the front of your hair because picking it will make it worse. Just let your scalp relax.
2. You should start using a gentle natural shampoo. The easiest one to be found in Nigeria is Dudu Osun, it contains many natural ingredients that are good for the hair. After you shampoo your hair, as a conditioner mix: sheabutter, avocado (ripe), aloe vera gel (preferably the raw one from the plant), coconut oil and rose mary oil (5-10 drops) and put it in your hair, cover with a plastic cap and leave it in your hair for about 30mins to 1 hour. After you wash this off while your hair is damp rub castor oil (Castor oil is excellent for improving hair volume) on your hair. These products, will moisturise and strengthen you hair and encourage protein retention in your hair. Hiar is made of protein so protein is necessary for growth. Also rosemary oil is known to stimulate growth. Always wash your hair in sections, as this reduces hair loss when detangling
3. Comb your hair ONLY with a wide tooth comb, ONLY when its damp with some oil in it, and divide your hair in sections and gently comb from the tips to the roots. This will dramatic reduce hairloss and breakage from the roots and encourage thickness.
4. If you have always had hair like this, perhaps its something to do with your diet. Healthy eating habits play an important role in hair growth. Take vitamin B complex, Omega 3,6 and 9 for healthy hair growth. Eat lots of green vegetables, fruits, fish, avocado, eggs etc. These food encourage hair growth, healthy hair begins especially with a good diet, the more nutrients your body has the more your hair will grow.
5. Sleep with a satin scarf always to preserve the hair u have and prevent the materials of your pillow from drying the hair.
6. You can use dilute 1 Cup of Apple Cider vinegar with 2 Cups of water and spray on your hair and scalp, massage it into your scalp at least once a week and rinse of. This will clarify your scalp of product buildup over the years and encourage growth. You can also do this everytime before you shampoo and condition your hair.
7. Moisturise your hair with water first then coconut oil mixed with castor oil daily to improve elasticity, protein retention and thickness.
8. Be very gentle with your hair. Try and avoid the harsh chemicals in already creams, shampoos and conditioners like sulphate, petroleum, alcohol and parabens.

Also, apply coconut oil or jojoba oil to your scalp is also good to combat hair loss. In time your hair would improve, just be patient. I hope I have helped. Re: Grow Your Natural Hair Long by beautifulynappy(f): 9:06pm On Dec 05, 2013
Tip of the Day

For everyone wishing to grow their hair, please stay away from heat. Blowdry your hair a maximum of once a month and straighten your hair even less. Heat dries the hair and scalp and causes breakage. Straighteners are known to burn your hair right off your head! So if you are a heavy heat user, try and cut down and stretch your hair in other ways like twists, threading etc.

Have a nice day all

You are welcome! I wish you plenty of luck. You can start your search in Health Plus and Medplus for the oils and vitamins. Some of our markets are the best place to find shea butter and even coconut oil. Also, I don know if your hair is chemically altered, but if it is, perhaps you might need to reduce harsh chemical treatments like relaxers, I know relaxers always burnt my scalp.
